Stonehenge: a man-made wonder of the world

Stonehenge is an ancient circle of stones in the south of England. It was built about 5,000 years ago. There are about 80 stones, and each is about five metres tall. The builders brought them from hills in the west of the country, on a journey of over 200kilomeres away. It was probably a place to bury dead people, or somewhere to study the stars and the sky at night. Some of the stones are missing, but it’s still one of the most wonderful sights of the world. It is a wonder also because of this question: How did people move these huge pieces of stone from so far? No one knows the answer.

Thanks for your last letter. It was very interesting to hear about your soccer team. You call it “football”, but in Australia we call it “soccer”. We have another game called “Aussie rules football”. “Aussie” is short for “Australian”.

You said your next match was against a girls’ team. I expect that was funny! What was the score? Did you beat them easily?

A lot of girls in Australia play soccer, but very few play “Aussie rules”. It’s much rougher game than soccer, and it’s quite easy for players to get hurt. I think that’s why most girls don’t play it.

I play for our school’s Aussie rules football team. We had a match yesterday, but I couldn’t take part. I had got hurt in our last match.

A Little Traveler

Vicente Cabrera is a Mexican farmer. He works in the fields every day. His son, Tomas, is three years old. Tomas often goes to the fields with his father. Mr. Cabrera works, and Tomas plays.

One day Mr. Cabrera went to a field with Tomas. Tomas sat on a rock while Mr. Cabrera worked. Mr. Cabrera looked up from his work. Tomas wasn’t on the rock. Mr. Cabrera looked in the field for Tomas. The Mexican police telephoned the U.S. Border Patrol. “We need your help,” they said. The Mexican police told the U.S. Border Patrol officers about Tomas.
