unattractive,handicapped,deviant.Inthelate1960sandearly1970s,theconventionalconceptionoftheunmarriedpersonasalonelyloserbegantoyieldtoanewconception--theswingingsingle.Apartmentcomplexesinurbancentersadvertisedalifestyleorganizedaroundtheswimmingpoolandclubroomfeaturingnightlycocktailpartiesandtheimaginationthateveryonepairedoffbybedtime.MagazinessuchasPLAYBOYandPENTHOUSE,PLAYGIRLandVIVAenhancedtheimageofthisnewsinglelife.Newsmagazinesranfeaturesthatassumedthatarapidlygrowingproportionofthepopulationwouldremainpermanentlysingle.Theideagainedcredibilityfromtwofacts:First,thenumberofunmarriedadultsintheUnitedStatesincreasedfrom12.9millionin1960to25.6milliontwodecadeslater.Second,themedianageatthetimeofmarriage,afigurethathaddeclinedsteadilyfrom1900to1960,begantoclimbagain:increasingnumbersofyoungadultsaredelayingtheirfirstmarriagetotheirlatetwentiesorearlythirties.

Whetherornotanewlifestyleofpermanentsinglehoodisemerging,substantialnumbersofpeoplearelivingit,atleasttemporarily.Butcontrarytothemediaview,thereisnoonelifestyleforsingles.Mostsingleshaveasurprisinglyorthodoxlifestylethatfocusesonfindingaplacetolive,attemptingtofindasatisfyingjob,andseekingfriends,dates,andultimatelyamorepermanentrelationship.Onlyinfairlylargecitiesdoyoufindspecialfacilitiescateringtosingles.Infactinsmallercommunitiestherearestillexamplesofprejudiceagainstsingleadultsbyemployersandlandlordswhoregardthewholegroupasirresponsibleandwild.
