It seems that electronic devices just keep getting smaller. Scientists in the United States have announced the creation of the first transistor with only two dimensions(二维).

A transistor is a small electronic device that transfers or carries electronic current. Scientists hope these new 2D transistors will be used for building high-resolution (高分辨率) displays that need very little energy.

Two groups of scientists created these 2D transistors. They report that the transistors are only a few atoms thick.

Usually transistors are made with the element silicon (). Computer processors, memory chips, TV screens and other electronic devices contain billions of silicon-based transistors. But these very small electrical parts have certain limitations.

Dimitris Ioannou is an electrical engineering professor at George Mason University. He says the traditional transistor has been improved as much as it can be. He adds that researchers have been looking for new materials with special features and they want transistors to be seen through and soft.

"If the layers are very thin, the transistor can become flexible, so it doesn't have to be rigid (坚硬的) , like it would be in a silicon chip. So people can think of applications like wearable electronics, television screens and other things,” said Ioannou.

These new transistors can also carry higher current. They also can move the current much faster than traditional transistors. This is important for high-definition screens.

Dimitris Ioannou says the scientific success could prove very useful in the future. "Now, how good and how useful it will be, it's still in the stage of research, but it certainly is an advance," said Ioannou.

24. Which of the following statements about the newly created transistor is TRUE?

A. They are expected to be used in high-resolution displays.

B. The transistors are made with the element silicon.

C. They are rigid, just like traditional transistors.

D. They have already been put into actual use.

25. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. The traditional transistors have been changed into two-dimensional ones.

B. Many of the traditional transistors have been improved over the years.

C. The traditional transistor has been developed to its fullest.

D. The traditional transistor has been developed quite well.

26. What is Dimitris Ioannou's attitude towards the creation of the new transistors?

A. Negative. B. Neutral. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.

C

Closeness and independence are both important in our life. Though all humans need both of them, women tend to focus on the first and men on the second. It is as if their lifeblood ran in different directions.

These differences can give women and men differing views of the same situation, as they did in the case of couple I will call Tracy and Brian. When Brian’s old high school friend called him at work and announced he’d be in town on business the following month, Brian invited him to stay for the weekend. That evening he informed Tracy that they were going to have a houseguest, and that he and his friend would go out together the first night to chat like old times. Tracy was upset. She was going to be away on business the week before, and the Friday night when Brian would be out with his friend would be her first night home. But what upset her the most was that Brian had made these plans on his own and informed her of them, rather then discussing them with her before extending the invitation.

Tracy would never make plans, for a weekend or an evening, without first checking with Brian. She can’t understand why he doesn’t show her the same courtesy and consideration that she shows him. But when she protests, Brian says, “I can’t say to my friend, ‘I have to ask my wife for permission’!”

To Brian, checking with his wife means seeking permission, which implies that he is not independent, not free to act on his own. To Tracy, checking with her husband makes her feel good to know and show that she is involved with someone, that her life is bound up with someone else’s.

Tracy and Brian both felt upset by this incident because it cut to the core of their primary concerns. Tracy was hurt because she sensed a failure of closeness in their relationship: He didn’t care about her as much as she cared about him. And he was hurt because he felt she was trying to control him and limit his freedom.

27. What is the primary purpose of the author in writing this passage?

A. To educate the reader on how to maintain good family relationships.

B. To tell the reader how to make close connections with other people.

C. To suggest the best way of coping with family conflicts.

D. To explain the difference in communication styles between men and women.

28. Tracy was upset because ______.

A. she didn’t know Brian’s friend B. she was too busy to meet Brian’s friend

C. Brian didn’t care about her and hurt her deeply

D. Brian didn’t consult her before inviting his friends home

29. What would Tracy most probably do if she plans to buy something expensive?

A. She would discuss with Brian.

B. She would simply decide on her own.

C. She would ask her friends for advice.

D. She would buy Brian something expensive first.

30. According to the passage, compared with men, women tend to ______.

A. be more emotional

B. be easier to get hurt

C. emphasize more on sharing

D. emphasize more on independence

“Oh, oh," I thought.1 was the one who broke the window. I had not meant to do it. It was caused by an inaccurate(不准确的)throw of a baseball. If I admitted it1would be in a lot of trouble and even punished. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn't even get any pocket money. “I know how you like birds,”she said as she stood looking down at my burning face. "Here is that field guide(指南)about birds that you are always checking out. It is yours." Hearing this, I lowered my head, wondering whether she was teasing me. As I was expecting a storm of criticism, she continued, "Anyway it's time we got a new one for the school. The book is yours and you will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, I am rewarding you because you told the truth."

I couldn't believe itI wasn't being punished for breaking the window and I was getting my very own bird field guide which I loved so much that I could hardly put it down when I picked it up. All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me-honesty is the best policy.
