The U.S. media called them as “anti-intellectual movie”. “Forrest Gump” is an anti-intellectual film masterpiece of this period, which was adapted from American writer Winston • Gloom’s best-selling novel with the same name. By describing an intellectual disability with IQ of 75, this movie reflects all the aspects of American life, and shows many important events about American social and political life for decades in a unique perspective. It enables the Americans to reexamine the State and individuals in the past, meditate on the nature of Americans.
Through this film, we understand the generations’ ideas and values of the United States, including the American Dream and American optimism, aware of people's lifestyles in different countries and their attitudes toward life. “Forrest Gump” is the most representative movie of this period on the “American dream”. It was an anti-intellectual film directed by Robert Zemeckis, and acted by Tom Hanks. The film acquired great success. The 67th Annual Academy Awards competition in1995, “Forrest Gump” got 13 nominations, obtained six awards, and also won the nation's top 10 box office films in that year. Four years later, the film entered the row of the greatest 100 movies in American history. Consequently, “Forrest Gump” can be treated as a myth of fool's movie in American movie history. Theme Family, friendship and love has always been the eternal topic of human history. This film narrates Forrest’s family, friendship and love stories around the fool cultural. Forrest’s leg was disabled in his childhood, and his IQ was low. People in the small town looked at Forrest with strange eyes, with only two women caring about and loving him: his mother gave him a great maternal love. Jenny then warmed his heart by her feelings of the innocent. In Mother’s mind, Forrest was not a burden, but God's gift to her.
