Russ Gremel, now 98 years old, decided it was time to donate $2 million to the Illinois Audubon Society, a charity(慈善机构)to purchase nearly 400 acres of land for wildlife protection. Gremel was able to make this amazing donation because he purchased $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock(股票)seven decades ago whose value has grown recently.
“A single man with no kids, Gremel has lived in the same Chicago house for 95 years, and has always lived simply”, neighbor Patrick Falso told TODAY. Falso said he heard Gremel say many times the “money wasn’t mine to begin with” and that he always intended to give it away.
The Gremel Wildlife shelter was founded on June 4. Illinois Audubon Society president Jim Herkert said Gremel’s donation was extremely generous. “It’s allowing us to protect a really valuable and important possession and realize one of Gremel’s wishes that we could find a place where people could come out and experience nature the way he did as a kid,” Herkert told TODAY.
After doing all this, this past weekend, Gremel adopted an old Chihuahua(吉娃娃犬). Winnie the dog was picked up as a homeless dog several months ago. She suffered from a kind of cancer, which was treated—and all she needed was a loving home, which Colleen Collins, the founder of Perfect Pooches Adoption Agency, was determined to find.
Gremel had lost his own beloved Chihuahua earlier this year. When he reached out to Collins about Winnie, she felt this could be a good match. That feeling grew when she brought Winnie to his house for a meet and greet, and Winnie was introduced not only to Gremel but also some of his friends and neighbors. One had brought over a lot of fresh strawberries; all said they’d be there to help out in any way needed.
25.Patrick Falso is mentioned in the text mainly to explain _________.
A.how Gremel earned the money B.what kind of person Gremel is
C.why Gremel made the donation D.where Gremel has been living
26.What can we learn about Russ Gremel from the text?
A.He raised many pet dogs in his life. B.He bought Walgreens stock at age 28.

A.They live in harmony with animals. B.They are impressed with dog Winnie.
C.They lead a healthy and wealthy life. D.They are caring and kind to each other.
C
Did you know that you have millions of tiny things living inside you? They are called microbes(微生物). Microbes live all over our bodies. They come in a huge variety of shapes. They can move around and communicate with each other. They are so tiny that the only way to see them is with a microscope. Bacteria, fungi(真菌), and viruses are examples of microbes.
“Microbes can be found everywhere in our bodies and all over the Earth,” Marie Samanovic Golden said. She is a scientist who studies microbes. “Understanding them is necessary for understanding our body.”
Scientists have known for years that some microbes cause diseases. Recently, by using new advances in technology, scientists have collected more information about microbes. They have learned that many microbes play a major role in fighting diseases.
“We know that microbes are important for our immune(免疫的)system,” says Susan Perkins, a scientist at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), in New York City. She is an organizer of The Secret World Inside You, a new show on microbes. At the AMNH show, visitors can use videos and a live theater presentation to explore how microbes influence health.
According to Perkins, what we eat affects what kinds of microbes that we have inside us, and it is important to have many kinds of microbes. Microbes in the digestive tract(消化道)help digest food. In the mouth, they protect teeth from cavities(蛀牙). Microbes also make vitamins.
“We are learning so much about microbes all the time,” Perkins said. “We have far more helpful microbes than harmful ones,” she says.
28.What can we learn about the new study on microbes?

The average American checks his/her smart phone once every six and a half minutes, or roughly 150 times each day. You probably do this without even thinking about it. This can influence how well we focus, and the degree to which we can have meaningful social communications, especially if we’re constantly interrupting ourselves with technology. This is a growing problem more so for younger people. However, some people might be more immune to this constant interruption. Many older adults may have not developed these “checking” habits, and are more focused on the present.
In our rapidly changing world, we value speed and efficiency(效率). However, there’s something to be gained by being slow. When I first started giving presentations to large audiences, I was a rapid communicator. With my mind racing a mile a minute, I tried to say everything I knew about a topic to be thorough, but I noticed the crowd didn’t always follow. Now, I have only one note to myself that I need as a reminder before beginning a presentation: “PAUSE”. I’ll set aside more time for questions and get more audience participation to gauge the level in which my message has been understood. With pauses and the right speed, clear message appears, often with fewer words.
Another chance to slow down is physical. Slowing down can make you more aware of the simple dangers of walking and falling. Falls can be one major cause of hurts and deaths in old age. Thus, taking time to walk down steps, avoiding a tripping(绊倒)danger or being aware of slippery surfaces is important at any age.
Today, there’re parts of our life that stress the benefits of being slow. And as we age, we might see the benefits of slowing down a little bit. While we often seek to prevent the process of aging, one necessity and potential benefit of aging may be to appreciate the benefits of slowing, enjoy the here and now a little bit more, and not to worry so much about the future.
32.How does technology affect us in the author’s opinion?
A.It makes our life pace much faster. B.It improves our communication skills.
C.It helps us form a number of good habits. D.It causes destructive harms to our memory.
33.What made the author change his speech style?
A.His high-speed thinking ability. B.His fast-changing speech topics.
C.The audiences’ not participating. D.The audiences’ misunderstanding.
34.What does the underlined word “gauge” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Raise. B.Assess.
C.Change. D.Keep.
35.What is suggested in the last paragraph?
A.Good things are worth appreciating slowly. B.Being slow is becoming a popular lifestyle.
C.The old tend to enjoy the benefit of slowing more. D.Few people know how to enjoy being slow.

I got out and quickly scanned the street and yard but saw no sign of him. So I returned to the house and searched every room, but I failed again. My eyes began to water. But I knew this was no time to cry. 38 The place where my dad always liked to sit was the back porch(阳台)even on the hottest afternoons.
I raced to the backdoor and there sat my dad. My hand quickly reached for the door handle, but I didn’t turn it. 39
As tears of relief flowed over my eyes, I remembered walking across schoolyard to my dad’s office every day after school. Upon my arrival, Dad would look up from whatever he was doing and greet me with a smile. 40 From the first grade through my senior year in high school, I had after-school chats with my dad. Yes, love was always in our heart.
A.Then he wanted to hear about my day.
B.My child knew what she saw wasn’t good.
C.My dad had fallen ill and was unable to go to the meet.
D.I forced myself to stay calm, and that was when it hit me.
E.I just stood there, feeling grateful for one more day with my dad.

听力部分录音稿
(Text 1)
W: Where does Suzan come from?
M: She was born in France and grew up in Spain, but now she’s an English citizen.
(Text 2)
W: I made us a dinner reservation for 9:00 pm tomorrow evening. It’s late, but the restaurant doesn’t close until 11:00 pm.
M: Okay, sounds good. I might be a little late, but I should arrive no later than 9:30.
W: OK.
(Text 3)
M: Shall we go to the cinema by bus?
W: Waiting a bus always takes too long. I would rather go there on foot.
M: In that case, I will drive my car. It’s fast and convenient.
W: OK.
(Text 4)
W: It seems to be clearing up.
M: It’s such a nice change. I really don’t think this weather will last.
W: Let’s just hope it doesn’t get cold again.
(Text 5)
W: We were advised to have a holiday by the lake. What’s your opinion?
M: I suggest we go to the seashore. I love it there.
W: But it is too far away. How about going to the mountains?
M: That’s a good idea.
(Text 6)
M: We’re going to have a party tonight. That’s great, but what kind of drink should we get?
W: I know that beer is your favorite, but I don’t think everyone likes it. So how about some soft drinks?
M: OK, but I don’t think we need too many soft drinks. We’ve got one bottle of orange juice, so another two bottles of cola will be enough. Is there anything else we need to prepare?
W: Well, let me see... maybe we’d better get some wine.
M: I agree, if you must. But you know, I don’t have any interest in drinking wine.
(Text 7)
W: Have you been to the new shopping mall opened two days ago?
M: Not yet. I saw a billboard advertisement for it on the roadside yesterday. I found the prices of many goods low. They are really bargains!
W: I think so. I saw a lot of ads on the train on my way home. I really want to go.
M: You like shopping? Perhaps we can go there together then.
W: OK! Could you give me a ride in your car?
M: Sure.
W: I can’t wait! The advertising has been so persuasive.
M: I know!
W: I guest it’s had a strong effect on us!
M: You’re right.
(Text 8)
M: Honey, what are you doing? Come and have breakfast. You don’t want to be late for work a second time this week, do you?
W: Of course I don’t. But I can’t find my glasses. Have you seen them?
M: Oh, dear. You’re always forgetting where you put them. What did you do just now?
W: I took a shower just a few minutes ago.
M: Maybe you left them in the bathroom.
W: No. I checked there, but I didn’t find them.
M: What else did you do?
W: After the shower, I went to the living room. Oh, I remember I read a magazine there. You know I can’t read without glasses.
M: Then you must have left them there. Go there quickly. I’m sure you’ll find them.
(Text 9)
M: Alina, what are you doing?
W: Enjoying a Korean film. I’m going to spend all next year in Korea and find more about its culture.
M: You mean you’ve been attracted by the Program?
W: I sure have.
M: That is wonderful. You must be excited.
W: Excited but nervous. You know I have to work on some basic conversation skills.
M: How much Korean can you understand?
W: Only a little now. But I’m going to take a special language class next month. I wish I were as clever as you are at foreign languages. I’d love to study abroad.
M: Why don’t you? The school has a lot of programs that don’t require that you’ve mastered a foreign language. You just have to be the kind of person who is quick to learn new things and can get used to the new environment fast.
W: I thought all programs required one to know a foreign language. Thank you for letting me know this.
(Text 10)
W: Good evening. You are listening to Pop World of BCD International. I’m Susan Welch.
Well, first, I would like to say a few words to my dearest listeners who are not very familiar with this program.
Since many people want to listen to and understand pop songs, radio producers at BCD International, we have made hundreds of programs over the years. We have a vast library of the golden old classical songs, as well as the latest pop songs.
For those of you who like a bit of background with your favorite music, here’s The History of Pop or The Road to Music. These two series bring you the language of pop music and information about the periods and the artists. If you want to hear from the artists themselves, there’s a new series called About the Big Hits. It is about the meaning and ideas behind their songs.
If you want to understand the words to big music hits, Pop Word is the program for you. After all, it’s hard enough for native English speakers to understand most pop songs. So, if English isn’t your first language, you shouldn’t be surprised if the words to many songs leave you in the dark.
