我很荣幸在这里与施瓦布教授一起主持这样一个开幕仪式，我们认为这是大连历史上的一个重要时刻，世界经济论坛首届新领军者年会在我们这个美丽的城市正式拉开帷幕，我谨代表大连市政府和600万大连人民对年会的召开表示热烈的祝贺，对远道而来的各位来宾表示热烈的欢迎。

I am really honored to preside at this opening ceremony with Professor Schwab. This is an important moment in the history of Dalian -- the official unveiling of the World Economic Forum's Inaugural Annual Meeting of the New Champions in our beautiful city. On behalf of the Dalian Municipal Government and the six million Dalian people, I would like to express our warmest congratulations to the convening of the Annual Meeting and we welcome most sincerely participants from around the world.

今年，对于中国来说，是不平凡的一年。我们经历了两件大事：第一件事是汶川特大地震灾害造成了巨大的生命财产损失。中国人民在灾难面前表现了坚强、勇敢、团结和不屈不挠的精神。目前，受灾群众得到了妥善安置，恢复重建工作正在有条不紊地展开。第二件事是北京奥运会成功举办。这一体育盛会不仅为来自世界各地的运动员展示风采创造了良好的条件，而且让世界更多地了解中国，让中国更多地了解世界。

在抗震救灾和举办奥运会的过程中，我们得到了国际社会的广泛理解、支持和帮助。在此，我代表中国政府和人民表示诚挚的感谢。

Mr. President,

For China, this has been a special year. We experienced two major events. One was the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, which causes grave losses of life and property. In the face of the disaster, the Chinese people showed great strength, courage, solidarity and resilience. By now, the people affected by the earthquake have been properly relocated and recovery and reconstruction work is well underway. The other was the successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games. This grand sporting event provided a good opportunity for athletes from around the world to show true sportsmanship. It also enabled the world to learn more about China and China more about the world.

In our fight against the earthquake disaster and our efforts to host the Games, we received understanding, support and assistance from the international community. I wish to take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude on behalf of the Chinese Government and people.

(On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I first of all would like to express sincere gratitude to the international community for the understanding, support and help it extended for China’s earthquake relief and hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games.)

The past few months have been truly eventful for the Chinese people. We withstood the severe test of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake and shared with the rest of the international community the joy brought by the Beijing Olympic Games and the Paralympics.

It gives me great pleasure today to meet you again, leaders of the business community, and exchange views with you on the global financial crisis and China's development.

The year 2008 has been truly eventful for China. The Chinese people prevailed over disasters caused by the heavy snowstorms and the massive earthquake that hit Wenchuan, Sichuan Province. And we successfully hosted the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games. I wish to take this opportunity to express, on behalf of the Chinese Government and people, heartfelt thanks to friends from the business community of various countries and regions for the support and assistance given to us in our fight against the severe natural disasters and in hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Your Excellency President Rakhmon, Dear colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to join you in the beautiful city of Dushanbe. Let me begin by thanking you, President Rakhmon, and the Government and people of Tajikistan for your gracious hospitality and thoughtful arrangements. China salutes Tajikistan for the great, effective work it has done over the past year as SCO president to strengthen the Organization.

The Beijing Olympic Games came to a successful end a few days ago. Before and during the Games, in accordance with the agreement reached at the Bishkek Summit, SCO members and observers rendered China full assistance and cooperation in Olympic security and the torch relay, thus creating favorable conditions for a successful Olympic Games. In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan Province, SCO member and observer states expressed sincere sympathies and offered valuable help to the Chinese people. All this is a clear indication of our profound friendship featuring solidarity, mutual assistance and sincere cooperation. It is also a concrete example of how the Organization acts in the “Shanghai Spirit” and implements the purposes and principles of the Treaty on Long-term Good-neighborly Relations, Friendship and Cooperation. I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese Government and people, our heartfelt thanks for all this.

尊敬的校长，老师们，同学们：

今天外边下着大雪，天气严寒，但是我的心是热的。我早已盼望在剑桥同老师、同学们见面，互相交流。现在正是金融危机的严冬季节，但是我看到年轻人，仿佛看到了春天，看到了光明和未来。因为我坚信，知识的力量，年轻人的勇气，是可以改变人的命运、国家的命运、整个世界的命运。一篇好的演讲应该是不加修饰的。用心说话，讲真话，这就是演讲的实质。我希望我的演讲能够给老师、同学们思想以启迪。你们能够记住其中一两句话，那我也就满足了。

到高等学府，我的心里总是充满敬意。这种心情是由于我对知识、对老师、对学校的尊敬。所以，我方才深深地给校长、给老师们鞠个躬，那不是礼节，而是一个学生对待校长和老师应尽的礼貌。

来到向往已久的剑桥大学，非常高兴。剑桥举世闻名，培养出牛顿、达尔文、培根等许多杰出的科学家、思想家，为人类文明进步作出了重要贡献。今年是剑桥建校８００周年，我谨致以热烈祝贺！首先，我向剑桥大学赠送“中华数字书苑”，其中收录了中国出版的２０万种电子图书，涉及中国政治、经济、历史、文化等各个领域，大家可以从中更多地了解中国。

这是我第四次访问英国。中英相距遥远，但两国人民的友好交往不断增多。香港问题的圆满解决，经贸、文教、科技等领域的有效合作，为发展中英全面战略伙伴关系奠定了坚实基础。在此，我向长期致力于中英友好的朋友们表示崇高的敬意！

Vice Chancellor Alison Richard, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to come to Cambridge, a world-renowned university that I have long wanted to visit. Cambridge has produced many great scientists and thinkers Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Francis Bacon, to name but a few, and made important contribution to the progress of human civilization. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the university. Please accept my warm congratulations.

This is my fourth visit to your country. Despite the great distance between China and Britain, the friendly exchanges between our peoples have been on the rise. The successful resolution of the question of Hong Kong and fruitful cooperation between our two countries in areas such as economy, trade, culture, education, science and technology have cemented the foundation of our comprehensive strategic partnership. Here, I wish to pay high tribute to all those who have been working tirelessly to promote friendly ties between our two countries.

刘明康主席在大英博物馆的演讲：全球金融稳定与全球文明

各位嘉宾、女士们、先生们：

非常荣幸能受邀在“世界文明”年度演讲会上做主旨发言。南非前总统曼德拉先生、诺贝尔经济学奖获得者森先生等知名人士曾在此发表过精彩的演说。作为这次讲坛的发言人，我谨向他们对人类文明作出的重大贡献表示最崇高的敬意。同时，我也想借此机会感谢大英博物馆给我这个机会谈一谈我对于世界文明和人类发展的一些看法。我希望我的演讲不辜负大家的期望。

I am delighted to be here, and feel much honored indeed to be invited as a speaker at the Annual BP “World Civilization” Lecture, here at the British Museum. To name but a few of my predecessors, Nelson Mandela, Mary Robinson and Amartya Sen who are profoundly respected for their enormous contributions to the emancipation and the well-being of humanity. To them I wish to pay my highest tribute. I also wish to thank British Museum for extending me the privilege to further their thoughts on global civilization, a topic that concerns the development of humanity. I am making my best endeavors to live up to the expectations of my generous hosts and this truly distinguished audience.

It is always an inspiring, enriching and refreshing experience to visit the British Museum, a place that showcases the evolution of human civilization through interaction and integration with one another across centuries. Driven by the economic, technological, cultural and social progress, such integration is gathering momentum year by year. We call this process globalization. As we have ushered in the new millennium, like or dislike it, we are embracing a new era of globalization, where the accelerated integration is increasingly showing its bearings on every country and every individual alike.

Obama’s Town Hall Speech at Fudan Univ.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Nong hao! Good afternoon. It is a great honor for me to be here in Shanghai, and to have this opportunity to speak with all of you. I'd like to thank Fudan University's President Yang for his hospitality and his gracious welcome. I'd also like to thank our outstanding Ambassador, Jon Huntsman, who exemplifies the deep ties and respect between our nations. I don't know what he said, but I hope it was good. (Laughter.)

What I'd like to do is to make some opening comments, and then what I'm really looking forward to doing is taking questions, not only from students who are in the audience, but also we've received questions online, which will be asked by some of the students who are here in the audience, as well as by Ambassador Huntsman. And I am very sorry that my Chinese is not as good as your English, but I am looking forward to this chance to have a dialogue.

This is my first time traveling to China, and I'm excited to see this majestic country. Here, in Shanghai, we see the growth that has caught the attention of the world -- the soaring skyscrapers, the bustling streets and entrepreneurial activity. And just as I'm impressed by these signs of China's journey to the 21st century, I'm eager to see those ancient places that speak to us from China's distant past. Tomorrow and the next day I hope to have a chance when I'm in Beijing to see the majesty of the Forbidden City and the wonder of the Great Wall. Truly, this is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promise of the future.

这是我首次访问中国，我看到你们博大的国家，感到很兴奋。在上海这里，我们看到了瞩目的增长，高耸的塔楼，繁忙的街道，还有企业家的精神。这些都是中国步入21世纪的迹象，让我感到赞叹。同时我也急切的要看到向我们展现中国古老的古迹，明天和后天我要到北京去看雄伟壮丽的故宫和令人叹为观止的长城，这个国度既有丰富的历史，又有对未来憧憬的信念。
