(At age 71, Linda Pastan is author of 11 volumes of poetry. And she is this year's winner of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, given for lifetime achievement and at $100,000, Linda Pastan, welcome and congratulations.)

A:在读你的诗时，我发现一贯的风格：简明扼要、清晰、简短、善于捕捉细微的瞬间

(When I read your poems, there's a consistent style: Concise, clear, short, small moments captured.)

Ｂ：Well, I have a natural impulse to condense. I'd like to write long narrative poems .I'd like to write a novel. And any time I start anything long, I keep trying to take out anything extraneous, and I end up with a small lyric poem that just happens. But each poem of mine goes through something like 100 revisions.

(对，我有一种天然的冲动去提炼，我想写长的叙事诗，我想写长篇小说，而每当我开始写长的东西，我总是努力将无关的东西去掉，最终写成的就是短小的抒情诗。但是我的每首诗都差不多要改上100遍。)

(What is it that you're looking for?)

Ｂ：Ｗell, I want every word to have to be there. I want a certain kind of impact on the reader, the sort of condensed energy that can then go out.

(啊，我用的每个词都是非用不可的，我想给读者一种冲击，那种聚集的能量喷薄而出的冲击。)

A:你写了很多关于你自己的生活、关于家庭事物、关于现实生活的事情。你为什么喜欢选择这样的题材？

(You write a lot about your life, domestic issues, real-life issues. Why do you prefer to write on these issues?)

Ｂ：I have always written about what's around me, but I mean, there's always something changing. When my children were small, there were a lot of small children running through the poems. As friends and family have started to age and die, there's a lot more darkness and death in them. But I think I've always been interested in the dangers that are under the surface, but seem like simple, ordinary domestic life. It may seem like smooth surfaces, but there are tension and dangers right underneath, and those are what I'm trying to get at.

（我一直写我身边的事，但我的意思是，总有一些事物在变化。我的孩子们小的时候，我的诗中有许多小孩子，当朋友和家人开始上了岁数、过世时，诗中有许多黑暗和死亡。但我认为我一直对那些看似简单普通的家庭生活的、实际是潜伏的危险感兴趣，表面上似乎很平稳，但是底下却充满了紧张和危险，那些是我力图表达的。）

(Now, I don't usually get to ask this of poets, but what will you do with $100,000?)

Ｂ：I have seven grandchildren who are going to need some kind of help with college. So I'm going to do something serious with some of that money. But I felt that I had to do something really fun for myself, and sine I am a compulsive reader , I am giving myself permission to buy any books I want to buy . I used to write them down when I read about them or read reviews and wait a year until they came out in paperback. Now when they come out in hardback, if I want then I'm going to let myself buy them.

（我有7个孙子孙女，他们上大学都需要某种帮助，所以那笔钱中的一部分，我得用于正儿八经的事，但我觉得我也得为自己做些有趣的事，因为我热衷于读书，我现在会允许自己买想买的任何书，过去我读到关于这些书的介绍或评论时，我就记下来，然后等上一年，等到平装本上市。现在如果我想要的话，就算是精装本，我也会让自己买。）
