第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题; 每小题2分,满分30分)

Many years ago, when I was a young man in my twenties, I worked as a salesman for a St.Louis piano company. We sold our pianos all over the state by advertising in small town newspapers and then, when we had received sufficient replies, we would load our little trucks, and drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied.

Every time we would advertise in the cotton country of Southeast Missouri, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” The old lady had scrawled on and on until she filled up the postcard, then turned it over and even wrote on the front-around and around the edges until she filled up there was barely room for the address.

No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards. One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room sharecroppers cabin in the middle of a cotton field.

The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit-- no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head and not a very good one . I could see daylight through it in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feedsack dress.

A. cried B. begged

C. written D. called

58. After the writer explained to her, the old lady .

A. accepted the writer’s advice

B. didn’t listen to the writer

C. reported the writer to the boss

D. told her granddaughter to write postcards

59. What do you expect to be continued?

A. The writer helped the old lady.

B. The old lady gave up writing postcards.

C. The local government tried to help.

D. The writer lost his business.

Tens of thousands of South Africans have joined dozens of world leaders for the national memorial service for former President Nelson Mandela. The service was held in front of a noisy crowd in the FNB stadium in Johannesburg.

US President Barack Obama said Mr Mandela was a "giant of history", describing him as the last great liberator of the 20th Century. The former South African president died last Thursday, aged 95.

The country is observing a series of commemorations(纪念) leading up to the funeral on Sunday. The memorial service, which began at about 12:00 (10:00 GMT), lasted about four hours. It was one of the biggest gatherings of international dignitaries(高层) in recent years, with more than 100 current(现任的) or former heads of state or government attending.

There had been fears people would be turned away. But with heavy rain, security and transport issues, and the fact that Tuesday was not declared a national holiday, areas of the 95,000-capacity stadium remained empty. Introducing the proceedings, the master of ceremonies, Cyril Ramaphosa, said that Mr Mandela's "long walk is over... and he can finally rest".

Current South African President Jacob Zuma made the keynote address but was booed (喝倒彩)in some parts of the ceremony. He said Mr Mandela was "one of a kind... a fearless freedom fighter who refused to allow the cruelty of the apartheid(种族隔离) state to stand in way of the struggle for the liberation of his people". Mr Zuma announced he was renaming the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where Mr Mandela will lie , as the Mandela Amphitheatre.

Earlier Mr Obama delivered his address, carried on the White House web site, to huge cheers. He said: "It is hard to eulogise(颂扬) any man... how much harder to do so for a giant of history, who moved a nation towards justice. "He said Nelson Mandela had taught the world the power of action and the power of ideas, and that it had taken a man like Mr Mandela to free not only the prisoner but also the jailer.

60. Why was the memorial service said to be one of the biggest gatherings of international dignities in recent years? .

A. Because large amounts of money had been spent.

B. Because everyone in the country had been asked to attend.

While many Chinese overseas artists are switching to other more profitable fields, Huang Shanye, a painter of the Zhuang ethnic group, stands out as an exception. His art has gradually earned him fame over the course of his more than 20 years in the United States. He was even able to leave behind his steady job as an art teacher and fully devote himself to what he describes as a pursuit(追求) of beauty.

The common theme of Huang's many works lies in the combination of traditional Chinese elements and Western painting techniques. "I apply Chinese calligraphy(书法), paper cutting, facial makeup of Peking Opera -- all the things that I can find in traditional Chinese culture -- to Western oil painting," Huang said at an exhibition held recently in his home county of Montgomery, Maryland in the US, where friends and neighbors had come to view some of his work.

One of Huang's works in the show, which had been featured on the exhibition's flier(广告传单), served as a good example. Titled In Harmony, the painting shows two green dragons facing one another on a golden plate -- a characteristic of Chinese tradition. Huang decorated the surface with the words "peace" and "dragon", both in Chinese and in English. Michele Cohen, director of the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery, pointing to Huang's In Harmony, says: "I think this work really shows how an artist can combine one tradition with another, and it really comes out in a mixed form."

In 1998, American composer Silas Huff met Huang at an exhibition and was moved by Huang's sketch Tapestry of Dreams, which was later realized into a large-scale work consisting of a dozen 1-by-1-meter panels of paintings describing the traditions and longings of Huang's people.

Inspired by the work, Huff composed a 25-minute symphony(交响乐), Spring Song Festival, made up of Chinese folk melodies. Ten years later when Huff and Huang reconnected, Huff was able to bring two ballet schools on board and create a ballet based on the symphony. The work was performed at LaGuardia Performing Art Center in New York in the spring of 2009, with Huang's Tapestry of Dreams as a background.

64. What is the theme of Huang’s many works?

US scientists have performed an important reversal(逆转) of the ageing process in animal studies. They used a chemical to rejuvenate(使年轻) muscle in mice and said it was the equivalent(等同于) of transforming a 60-year-old's muscle to that of a 20-year-old — but muscle strength did not improve. Their study, in the journal Cell, identified an entirely new mechanism(原理) of ageing and then reversed it. Other researchers said it was an "exciting finding".

Ageing is considered a one-way street, but now researchers at Harvard Medical School have shown that some aspects can be reversed. Their research focused on a chemical called NAD. Its levels naturally drop in all cells of the body with age. The team showed this damaged the function of the cell's in-built power-stations, leading to lower energy production and ageing.

Experiments showed that increasing NAD levels, by giving mice a chemical which they naturally change into NAD, could reverse the sands of time. One week of youth-medication in two-year-old mice meant their muscles became similar to those of a six-month-old .

Dr Ana Gomes, from the department of genetics at Harvard Medical School, said: "We believe this is quite an important finding." She argues muscle strength may return with a longer course of treatment. However, this could never be a cure-all for ageing. Other aspects such as shortening of telomeres or damage to DNA would not be reversed.

Dr Gomes told the BBC: "Ageing is multi-factorial, it's not just one component(成分) we can fix, so it's hard to target the whole thing. I believe there is a lot of cross-talk in cells and energy is very important in a cell and likely to be a very big component of ageing that might cause some of the other things that happen with ageing."

68. From paragraph 1 we learn that ________.
A. bones can be transformed
B. muscle strength can be transformed
C. color can be transformed
D. muscle can be transformed

69. From paragraph 2 and paragraph 3 we learn that
A. researchers think ageing is a one-way street.
B. NAD levels’ dropping could make mice become younger.
C. increasing NAD levels could make mice become younger.
D. researchers think any aspect can be reversed.

70. Dr Gomes will agree that
A. we can target everything about ageing.
B. muscle strength may return over a longer course of treatment.
C. ageing could be cured.
D. energy is of little importance in a cell.
