Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal (人际的) relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful (有压力的) conditions. Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems.People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.Studies over types of illnesses and from depression (抑郁,情绪低落) to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps. People defend themselves against illness and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co – workers may let us know that they value us. Our self – respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting (转移注意力) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental (有帮助的) support--money aid, material resources, and needed services-that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

There are two type of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix theiir attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things, Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things .Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied .By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend many people , and make themselves dissgreeable everywhere .If this turn of mind was founded in nature ,such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied . The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation .It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realise its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination , it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck .Those people offend many others; nobody loves them , and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success .Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings . These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others, If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them .Otherwise , it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient , especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

41. People who are unhappy__________.

A. always consider things differently from others

B. usually are affected by the results of certain things

C. usually misunderstand what others think or say

D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things

42. The underlined phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means __________.

A. having a good taste with social life

B. making others unhappy

C. tending to scold others openly

D. enjoying the pleasure of life

43. We can conclude from the passage that __________.

A. we should pity all such unhappy people

B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life

C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness

D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons

44. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should __________.

A. prevent any communication with them

B. show no respoect and politeness to them

C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects

D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

45. In the passage, the writer mainly __________.

A. describes two types of people

B. laughs at the unhappy people

C. suggests the unhappy people should get rid of the habits of unhappiness

D. tells people how to be happy in life

D

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries ---- in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus ---- obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, Base Basah means wet rice in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road Wet Rice Road? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is Circular Road for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like Paya Lebar Crescent. This road is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

46. We learn from Paragraph 1 that __________.

A. the government is usually the first to name a place

B. many places tend to have more than one name

C. a ceremony will be held when a place is named

D. people prefer the place names given by the government

47. What does the underlined phrase die hard in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Change suddenly. B. Change significantly.

C. Disappear mysteriously. D. Disappear very slowly.

48. Which of the following places is named after a person?

A. Raffles Place. B. Selector Airbase.

C. Piccadilly Circus. D. Paya Lebar Crescent.

49. Bras Basah Road is named __________.

A. after a person B. after a place

C. after an activity D. by its shape

50. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.

B. Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.

C. The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.

D. Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

第三部分:写作(提高题)

第一节:阅读表达(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) (学法题)

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated(估计) to have been about five million.Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.

In fact,it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate(足够的) working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.

The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present day importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers.English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.

Dear Tom,

I read your letter yesterday. It’s good that you have a high aim for yourself and you know what has prevented you from achieving high scores in exams. But you should remember that even the very best student can make mistakes sometimes. So don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

As far as I am concerned, learning from your mistakes in past exams is a quick way to stop making the same mistakes next time. To begin with, if there are questions that can’t be solved by yourself, you should turn to your teachers or classmates for help. What’s more, during the exams you’d better make a good plan to distrbute your time according to the questions.Besides , try to leave a few minutes at the end to check your answers.

Enjoy the challenge that each neew exam brings to you. I believe a good learning habit willl finally help you gain success..

Best wishes.

Yours sincerely ,
