When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words.

He used to come downstairs to breakfast.

The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the “Deaths” first, and then he knocked once on the table. One of my sisters brought his bread, already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but once I heard him say, “I love you very much, Edith. I would love you more if you buttered my bread on both sides.” He read the paper all through breakfast.

Two knocks on the table meant “I am ready for my tea.” If a single knock followed that meant, “More bread, please.”

After breakfast he said,“Boots.” The paper was spread for him over the back of an armchair. Yesterday’s paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He read standing, at the same time putting on his boots and trying the laces. With one boot finished he said, “Bus.”

At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop a bus when it came. It came early sometimes and it had to wait for my father. “Overcoat, hat.” One of my sisters had already brushed his overcoat. Now she held it open for him and guided his arms into it. Another girl came with his hat, nicely brushed. “Handkerchief, tie.” They were brought and put, with his tobacco, into his pocket. He looked out of the window and said either “Walking stick” or “Umbrella”. It was handed to him. Ready now, he was still reading the paper.

He didn’t put it down until he heard the shout “Bus coming!” Then he kissed my mother and went out. The girls breathed freely.

The builder will work out how much money is needed to build your house .He will work out the cost of the wood, bricks, the glass, and everything else that must be used in building the house. Later on, when he starts to build, this estimate (预算) must be corrected and revised. His estimate is based on existing prices, but prices of such things may change, and many other things may happen between the time when he makes the estimate and the time when he builds the house.

As soon as they walked into the kitchen, they knew something was wrong. Mom greeted them with pancakes and suggested that they look outside. They could not believe their eyes. It was pouring rain. It’s the end of class. When the bell rings, students of Luohu Foreign Languages School in Shenzhen quickly take out their cell phones. They want to log on to their micro blogs to check the interesting things that have happened in the last hour.

Since last year, the trend of micro blogging has swept the country. Recent surveys (调查) shows that most students in middle schools have a micro blog and some even update (更新) their blogs over five times per day.

“We learn many fresh and interesting things on micro blogs and they have become popular topics in class,” said Kitty Jiang, 14.“If you do not know about them, you are out of the loop.” It is also a great place for students to say something about themselves.“My parents always ask me to study hard, and encourage me before exams, but it really gives me pressure (压力),” said Alan Wang, 15.“I share these feelings on my micro blog. It's 2009. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you've been thinking these days. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.

Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system (神经系统). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body.

Stress (压力, 紧张) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less; nobody's life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body's protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素) . Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heart beat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can't fight or run away from, so you don't use up all that adrenaline. It just stays inside you, and that's what can do something bad to you.

What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren't under so much stress. You can make a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can't change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don't even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.

A. checks your fever B. looks at your throat

A. Because your brain is a part of your body.

B. Because you always think in a wrong way.

C. Because your nervous system is the most important.

D. Because the way you think has connection with the health of your body.

3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. You shouldn’t go to the gym if you are under stress.

B. You can do your homework to burn up adrenaline.

C. Disease and accidents are caused by stress.

D. Stress can sometimes be helpful.
