He has managed to live on every part of the planet, even though some climates have made life more difficult than others.尽管有些气候已经使人类的生活比其他的气候更加困难,但人类还是设法生存在这个星球的各个地方。

句中的manage作“设法完成”解,有“经过努力最后终于完成”的意思,作此义解时,后而多跟不定式。如:

He managed to escape from the fire.他设法从大火中逃了出来。

The room was very dirty, but he managed to clean it.这个房间很脏,但是他终于把它打扫二净了。

managetry都有“设法”的意思,但前者强调“终于完成了”,而后者则可能完成,也可能没完成。例如:

He tried to escape from the firebut was badly burnt.他设法从大火中逃出来,但还是被烧成重伤。

He managed to escape from the fire and finally succeeded.他设法从大火中逃出 来,终于成功了。

even though是连词词组,作“即使”“尽管”解,引出表示让步的状语从句。even though也可以用even if代替,意思和用法相同,又如:

They'll stand by you even though you don't succeed.即使你不成功,他们也会支 持你的。

She won't leave the TV set, even though (if) her husband is waiting for his supper.尽管她的丈夫正等她吃晚饭,她还是不愿意离开电视机。

Sometimes man moved; sometimes he remained and endured the discomforts.有时候,人们迁移;有时候留下来忍受着艰难。

endure的意思是“忍受”“忍耐”,后跟名词、不定式或动词-ing形式作宾语。又如:

I can't endure that woman.我对那个女人忍无可忍。

I can't endure to seeseeing children suffer.看着儿童受苦,我可受不了。

She couldn't endure to hearhearing about it.听到这事,她难以忍受。

The Indians endured much pain.印第安人忍受了很多痛苦。

句中remain作“停留”解,与stay同义,可以换用,又如:

Please remainstay here till I return.请呆到我回来。

How many weeks will you remain here? 你将在这儿停留几周?

另外remain还用作连系动词,作“继续保持” “仍然处于某种状态”解,后跟形容词、名词、分词或介词短语,作表语。例如:

If you don't eat you'll just have to remain hungry.如果你不吃东西,你就得继续挨饿。

He remained in his seat after all the other students had gone home.在别的学生者已回家之后,他仍然坐在座位上。

The door remained closed.门仍然关着。

We can remain friends.我们仍然是朋友。

She remained sitting when they came in.他们进来时,她仍然坐着。

remain也有“剩下”“还有”“留下”的意思,用作不及物动词。例如:

A few flowers still remained on the tree.树上还剩下几朵花。

They remained there all through the year.他们在那里一直呆到年底。

Where man has remained, he apparently has undergone some physical changes that have helped him adapt to his climate.在人长期逗留的地方,人就会明显地经历某些有助于他适应当地气候的身体上的变化。

句中undergo (underwentundergone)意思是“经受” “遭受”,又如:

The travelers underwent many difficulties.旅行者们经受了很多困难。

She has undergone a thorough examination at the hospital.她在医院接受了全面检查。

I am undergoing an examination on Monday.周一我将参加考试。

The town has undergone great changes during the last five years.在过去的五年里,这个城镇经历了巨大的变化。

adapt to作“适应……(新环境等)

解,又如:

He has not yet adapted to the climate.他还不适应这种气候。

Our eyes slowly adapted to the dark.我们的眼睛慢慢地适应了黑暗的环境。

She adapted quickly to the new climate.她很快地适应了新的气候。

The lightest skinned people generally come from colder regions, where they have less exposure to the sun.肤色最浅的人一般来自较寒冷的地带,在那里他们较少暴露于阳光。

skinned是形容词,作“有某种皮肤的”解,它是由名词skin双写ned构成

复合形容词。再如:three-legged三条腿的。又如:

Tom is a dark skinned person.汤姆是一个黑皮肤的人。

exposure用作不可数名词,作“暴露”解,与介词to连用,意为。暴露于……”。又如:

Exposure of the body to strong sunlight can be harmful. 身体受到烈日暴晒会受到损伤。

The paint came off as the result of exposure to the rain. 由于暴露在雨中,油漆冲她的皮肤干燥了。

vary用作不及物动词,意思是“有差异”“会变化”,又如:

People vary much in their ideas人们的想法有很多差异。(人们在想法上差异很多。)

That sort of thing varies from person to person.那种事情因人而异。

This student never varies; his work is always very good.这个学生从来没有什么变化,他的工作总是很出色。

This difference might be explained by the fact that big people have less skin

compared to weight than do small people.这种差别可以用这样的事实解释:个子大的人的皮肤与其体重相比较要比个子小的人少一些。

句中that引导的从句,说明前面名词fact的内容,是同位语从句。在英语的某些名词,如:fact, hope, belief, doubt, idea, news; possibility, thought等后面有时可见到that引导的同位语从句。例如:

The text -tells us a fact that smoking does great harm to people's health.这篇课文告诉我们~个事实:吸烟有害于人体健康。

I had no idea that he had already gone abroad.我不知道他已经出国了。

The possibility that people would have to walk to the farm was not mentioned.人们可能得步行去农场,这一点是没有提到过的。

Climate has significant effect on agriculture.气候对农业有重大的影响。

本句中significant有“重要的” “有意义的” “意味深长的”的意思,又如:

It is significant that no one went to the meeting.重要的是没有人去开会。

Does the report give all the significant facts of the case? 这个报告提出有关这一情况的重要依据吗?

Your success today may be significant for your future.你现在的成功可能会对你的将来有意义的。

Climatic factors such as the length of the growing season, the total amount of rainfall, and the daily and seasonal changes in temperature restrict the kinds of crops that can be grown.气候因素,如:植物生长期的长短、雨水的总量以及温度的每日和季节性变化,都限制可种植的庄稼的种类。

句中such asand seasonal changes in temperature是用来列举factors的内容。restrict作“限制”解,又如:

He feels this new law will restrict his freedom.他认为这条新的法律会限制他的自

In areas of frequent storms, transportation is often slowed down or interrupted.在经常有暴风雨的地区,运输速度经常减缓或中断。

本句中slow为动词,作“减慢”“使……缓慢” (to become / make slower),

又如:

Slow down before you reach the crossroads.在你到达十字路口之前就应减速。

The train slowed its speed as it came near to the station.当火车快驶进站时,就减速了。

interrupt的意思是“使中断”“中止(某活动)”,又如:

He interrupted his work to answer the call.他停止工作来接电话。

The storm has interrupted all travel by sea.暴风雨已中断了所有的海上交通。

The war interrupted the trade between the two countries.战争使两国之间的贸易中断。

Land transportation may be blocked by heavy snowfall.陆路运输可能会由于大雪而受阻。

句中的block为动词,意思是“阻塞”“阻碍”,又如:

You cant leave the city, all the roads are blocked by snow.你不能离开这个城市,所有的道路都被大雪封住了。

confine作“限制”解,confine sbsth to sth“将某人/某物限制在一定范围内”。又如:

John was confined to bed for a week with his cold.约翰感冒卧床一周了。

He was confined to prison for six years.他被关在监狱六年了。

so-called“所谓的”,通常作定语,含有贬义,多指名不符实的情况,又

如:

Where are your so-called friends now? 你那些所谓的朋友,现在都在哪儿了?

He is a so-called Christianwho shows no love to anyone.他是一个没有爱心的所谓的基督徒。

It is true that man changes his living habits in order to adjust to climate, but climate changes as wellthough more slowly.事实上,人类为适应气候而改变他的生活习惯,但气候也在变化,尽管这种变化较慢。

It is true that…这是一个由形式主语it引导的句子,其句型结构为It is+adj.

+ that +clause,真正的主语是后面的that从句。可用于该结构的形容词有:

possibleimpossiblenecessary, important等等。例如:

It is possible that it will snow tomorrow.明天有可能下雪。

It is necessary that every student keeps a diary in English.每个学生用英语记日记是必要的。

It is important that patients follow the advice of doctors.病人听从医生的建议是很重要的。

本课中man的含义不是单指“男人”,而是“人类”“人”的总称,多用单数,其前不加冠词,作主语时,谓语动词用单数,常用he, his来代替。例如:

Man creates himself.人类创造了自身。

Man's knowledge of things constantly develops.人类对事物的认识总是不断发展的。

Man will conquer nature.人定胜天。

though more slowly是一个省略句,全句应是though climate changes are more slowly。连although引导的让步状语从句,若从句的主语与主句的主语一致,并且谓语也一致或是be动词时,可用省略结构。例如:

1.方式状语从句:

(1)引导方式状语从句常见的从属连词有:as, as if as though, the way等。

The old worker runs very fast as if he were a young man.这个老工人跑得很快,就好像一个年轻人似的。

You ought to do as he tells you.你应该按照他告诉你的去做。

He paused as though he found a difficulty.他停下来好像遇到了一个难题。

He doesnt speak the way I do.他没有按照我的方式去讲话。

He loves me as if were his son.他爱我就像我是他儿子似的。

(2) as if/as though可以互换使用。

这两个连接词引导的方式状语从句所表示的情况是事实或具有很大可能性时,通常用直陈语气。

The boy is crying as if he has lost his way.这个男孩哭了似乎是迷了路。

He is a happy-go-lucky man as if he has no worries and cares in the world.他是一个很快活的人,似乎无忧无虑。

如果这个方式状语从句所表示的情况不是事实,而是主观的想象或夸大性的比喻,通常用虚拟语气。现在的情况用过去的时态,过去的情况用过去完成时,be-律用were。如: The young man with long hair looks as if he were a girl.这个留着长发的小伙子就像一个姑娘。

The injured man acted as if nothing had happened to him.这个受伤的男子行动起来似乎什么也没发生似的。

Everything in my childhood crowded upon in my mind as if they had just happened.童年发生的一切都涌在我的脑海中,仿佛就像昨天发生的一样。

2.比较状语从句常见的句型如下:

(1)表示A方和B方是同等程度

A+谓语+as+形容词(或副词)的原级+as +B

This ruler is as long as yours.这把尺子和你的一样长。

Mary dances as well as Kate.玛丽和凯特的舞跳得一样好。

He has bought as many books (much rice) as I have.他买的书(米)和我的一样多。

This is as good a book as that one.这本书和那本一样好。

(2)表示A方超过B

A+谓语(系动词)+形容词比较级+than +B

The weather here is hotter than that in your home town.这里的天气比你家乡的天气热。

There are more books in our library than in theirs.我们图书馆的书比他们图书馆的书多。

A+谓语(行为动词)+副词比较级+than+B

He runs faster than Jim.他比吉姆跑得快。

He speaks English better than I.他英语说得比我好。

(3)表示A方不及B

A+谓语的否定式+so(as)+形容词(或副词)的原级+as +B

Mrs. Brown is not so./ as old as she looks.布朗太太不像她看上去那么老。

It doesn't rain soas often in Xi'an as in Wuhan.西安下雨没有武汉多。

A+谓语的否定式+形容词(或副词)比较级+than +B

This room isnt bigger than mine.这问房没有我那问大。

He doesn't run faster than his brother.他没有他兄弟跑得快。

He is not cleverer than his brother.他没有他兄弟聪明。

He is no cleverer than his brother.他并不比他兄弟聪明。(含有他兄弟也不聪明之意)。

A+谓语+less+形容词(或副词)的原形+ than +B

I am less tall than he.我没有他高。

He does his homework less carefully than his brother.他做家庭作业不如他兄弟细心。。

(4)表示倍数

倍数要放在比较级之前,一倍用once,两倍用twice,三倍和三倍以上用“基数词+times”表示。

“这间房比那间房大三倍”可以说成:

three times bigger than that one.这个房间比那个大三倍。

This room is four times as big as that one.这个房间是那个房间的四倍。

four times the size of that one.这个房间的大小是那个房间的四倍。

(5)比较级前可以用一些表示程度和数量的状语。

※表示程度的词有:muchfar, a lota littlea bitslightly, evenstill等。

She has made far greater progress this term than she did last term.她这个学期的进步比上个学期大得多。

He is a bit taller than I.他比我高一点。

※表示数量的词,如two years older, a head taller, three metres longer, an hour earlier, 50%等也能修饰比较级。

She is a head taller than I.她比我高出一个头。

He arrived five minutes earlier than the teacher.他比老师早.到5分钟。

※“as+形容词原级+as+具体数字”表示“(高、多)达……”

The temperature here is as high as 39qC.这里的气温高达39C

He has learned as many as 4000 English words.他已学会多达4000个英语单词。

  母亲的情绪决定家庭的温度,在家庭生活中学会控制自己的情绪,要发火前深呼吸,以微笑面对家人,对待爱人、孩子多用表扬多夸奖,不要总是看到不足的地方。
