followsanextremelyviolentverbalclashbetweenthemotherandtheboyfriend.They
screamandshoutateachother,andthestudioaudienceapplauds,jeers,andshoutscomments.Theemotionalclimaxisreachedwhenthetearfuldaughterdeclaresherloveto
bothmotherandboyfriend,andcallsuponthemtomakeareconciliation.Thestudiohostroundsoff,and,inacloseupshot,shepraisesthematurityofthedaughtertotheapplauseofthestudioaudience.Acommercialbreakfollows.

WearewitnessingtheAmericantalkshow,“RickiLake”1andthesequencewiththemother,daughter,andboyfriendisoneoftheday’sthreestories.“RickiLake”isatalkshowwhichisspeciallyorganisedwiththeaimofcapturingasegmentofyoung,femaleviewerswho,inmarketingterms,arethemostinterestingintheAmericancommerciallybasedTVsystem.TheseriesisasuccessintheUSA,andithasmadeRickiLakeoneofthemosthighlypaidtalkshowhostsinAmericantelevision.TheseriesisalsobroadcastonanumberofTVstationsacrossEurope.InDenmark,atthemoment,wecanseetheseriesonTV3and3+.

AsaTVgenre,however,thetalkshowisneitherexclusivetotheninetiesnortocommercialtelevision.IntheUSAthegenreisasoldasthemediumoftelevisionitself,and
today,talkshowscomprisenosmallpercentageofavailableprogrammesoncommercialaswellasnon-commercialTVstations.Talkshowsarecheaptoproduceandpopularamongviewers,andtheabilityofthisgenretoattractviewersisnonewphenomenoneither.Itis,ofcourse,nonewphenomenoninDanishpublicservicetelevisioneither.Forexample;attheendoftheseventiesthetalkshow“Kanal22”(DR1979-82wasabletoattract36%ofthepopulation.Thistypeofprogrammewasdevelopedintotheseries“L.rdagskanalen”-SaturdayChannel-(DR1982-86whichhadaviewerquotaof68%ofthepopulation.TheprogrammetypesurvivedaftertheendingofthetelevisionmonopolyinDenmark,in“Eleva2ren”(TV21988-96.Inspiteofviewershavingawiderchoiceofchannels,“Eleva2ren”wasabletoreachaverageratingsof27%ofthepopulation.

Inshort,weareapparentlydealingwithaTVgenrewhichhasqualitiesattractivetoviewers.Iwillofferanexplanationofwhatthesequalitiesarewithanangleofapproachinaudience-orientedcritism2.ThereasonwhythetalkshowisapopularformofTV,and
