"Dr.Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?"

The usual laughter followed, and people stirred to go.Dr.Papaderos held up his hands and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.

"I will answer your question."

Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into a leather wallet and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this: "When I was a small child during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror.A German motorcycle had been broken in that place.

I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one.and, by scratching it on a stone, I made it round.I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine—n deep holes and crevices(裂缝)and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.

I kept the little mirror, and, as I went about my growing up, I would take it out in spare time and continue the challenge of the game.As I became a man, I got to understand that this was not just a child's game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life.I came to understand that I was not the light or the source of light. But light—truth, understanding, knowledge—is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.

I am a fragment of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know.Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world—into the black places in the hearts of men—and change some things in some people.Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am talking about. This is the meaning of my life.

59.On hearing the author's question, Dr.Papaderos_____at first.

A.laughed at his foolishness

B.wasn’t sure of the answer

C.doubted his seriousness

D.wasn't interested at all

60.How did Dr.Papaderos get the small round mirror when he was a child?

A.He found it on the road and made it round.

B.A dying German soldier gave him as a present.

C.He bought it by chance on his way home.

D.He put the broken pieces together and made it.

61.Why did Dr.Papaderos like the small round mirror so much as a child?

A.Because he was too poor to afford other good toys.

B.Because it could shine the places where the sun couldn't reach.

C.Because he believed it would bring good luck to him.

D.Because it told him a lot about what life really meant to him.

62.The best title for the passage might be " _____" .

A.The Meaning of Life

B.A Broken Piece of Glass

C.Dr.Papaderos’Experience

D.A Special Game in the Childhood

Two Christmas traditions have come under attack in recent years from environmentalists: Christmas cards and Christmas trees.

Paper cards are seen as wasteful and, for some people, going card ?free is another way of going green. They also argue that in a world of e—mail, Skype, Facebook and Twitter, people are in touch all the time anyway; they no longer need the yearly card that connects them with long lost friends. If you want to send Christmas greetings, there are free e—cards, which get the job done with no postage or wasted paper.

However, especially tor people who didn't grow up with e—mail, there is something missing from a Christmas e—mail. The first Christmas cards appeared in London in 1843 and were designed by the same man who had introduced the world's first postage stamp three years earlier. His name was Sir Henry Cole.

They rose in popularity throughout the 20th century. Many people sent cards that were sold for charity. The most famous of these are the ones sold for UNICEF.In the UK this year, in the three weeks before Christmas, the post office expects to handle 100 million cards every day.Environmental awareness also means that nowadays many people recycle their cards; this helps raise money to plant more trees, as well as recreating more paper.

When we think of trees at Christmas, there is one that immediately springs to mind—the evergreen tree that people decorate with ornaments and place their presents under. The custom dates back almost a thousand years to Germany, Nowadays 33 to 36 million Christmas trees are produced in America and 50 to 60 million in Europe each year. Some trees are sold live with roots and soil so people can plant them later and reuse them next year.

Some people prefer artificial trees as they are reusable and much cheaper than their natural alternative. However, environmentalists point out that they are made from petroleum products and they have much pollution.

63.What is the main idea of the article?

A.To analyze how two Christmas traditions grew in popularity.

B.To introduce the history of two typical Christmas traditions.

C.To point out the problems in some traditional ways of celebrating Christmas,

D.To explain the debate environmentalists and traditionalists about Christmas traditions.

64.Some people suggest getting rid of paper cards because ______.

a.they can not be recycled and reused

b.they are not environmentally friendly

c.they are mostly sold for charity

d.free e ?cards have many advantages over them

e.they are not as necessary as they used to be for people

A.a, b, d B.a, c, d C.b, d, e D.b, c, e

65.What can we conclude from the article?

A.This year has seen a dramatic drop in Christmas card sales and products.

B.The first Christmas cards were designed three years earlier than the stamps.

C.Environmentalists advise people to buy cards that are sold for charity to help raise money

D.Growing environmental awareness is encouraging people to begin to recycle their cards.

66.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A.Some people prefer to buy live trees that can be reused next year.

B.Artificial trees are much better than natural ones in all aspects.

C.The custom of decorating Christmas trees first appeared in Britain.

D.There is a wider Christmas tree market in America than in Europe.

D

You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When it happens, there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is.Don't let jealousy spoil your relationships.Deal with it at once and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you’ll have to do just that.Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you, just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been something coming between you.If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling.Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn't want to spend any time with you because you are always with your new friends from swim team then maybe you could invite him or her along the next time, just the two of you.Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise.Don't limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy.Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be ruined by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can't, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.

67.The underlined "it" in the first paragraph refers to ____

A.friendship B.relationship

C.admiration D.jealousy

68.Which of the following is NOT a proper way to face your friend when jealousy happens?

A.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her what the problem is.

B.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her why lie/she is jealous of you.

C.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know what you think.

D.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know how you do it.

69.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.

B.There's no solution to solve the problem of jealousy.

C.You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution.

D.You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or development.

70.The purpose of the passage is to _____.

A.explain what causes jealousy

B.offer some advice on making friends

C.introduce the way to cope with a jealous friend

D.explain how destructive the jealous emotion is
