When Randy Heiss went hiking behind his Patagonia, Ariz. farm, the last thing he expected to find was a Christmas list from a little girl across the US-Mexico border. I found this balloon on my morning walk near Patagonia on Sunday. Attached to it was a piece of paper with the Christmas wishes from a little girl, Heiss wrote on his Facebook page.

When he brought the list home to his wife, who speaks fluent Spanish, they determined that the little girl had asked for Enchantimals toys, clothes, art supplies and various other gifts. That's when Heiss set out to make the little girl's Christmas dreams come true. Heiss said he had attempted to send Christmas letters to Santa Claus via balloon when he was a kid but never received a response.

Heiss sent a Facebook message on Wednesday to XENY, a radio station in Nogales, to see if it could help him track down the girl or her family. He later received a response from the station, which had determined the author of the letter was an 8-year-old girl named Dayami, and the station wanted to set up a meeting between the two on Thursday. It just changed my entire day, Heiss told the Washington Post. Instead of going back to my office in Bisbee, I went with my wife to Walmart.

The couple bought almost everything on Dayami's list. They also brought a few gifts for Dayami's little sister, Ximena. They told the children they were ayudantes de Santa, or Santa's helpers.

Heiss,60, said the experience was very healing for him and his wife. Nine years ago,the couple's only son died. Being around children at Christmas time has been absent in our lives, Heiss said. We now have friends for life. For a day, that border fence with its concertina wire melted away.

24.How did Dayami send out her Christmas wishes?

A. By calling Heiss. B. By attaching them to a balloon.

C. By writing to a radio station. D. By sending a Facebook message.

25.When did Heiss know what the girl exactly wanted?

A. After the help of his wife. B. When he found the balloon.

C. After their meeting in America. D. When he got a response from the radio station.

26.What might make Heiss decide to fulfill the little girl's Christmas wishes?

A. His son's will. B. The girls request for help.

C. His similar unsuccessful experience. D. His desire to make friends with the girl.

27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. The couple got out of the pain completely.

B. The experience was a great relief to the couple.

C. The couple would help more children from Mexico.

D. There will be no border between countries one day.

A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong?

Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the out of sight, out of mind principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight.

The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point.

Willpower may also be made less vulnerable(脆弱)to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.

The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all.

28.From the studies in the passage we learn that .

A. people have unlimited self-control B. high motivation ensures one’s success

C. willpower is hardly completely exhausted D. too many temptations often lead to failure

29.The underlined phrase tap into in Paragraph 3 most probably means .

A. make use of B. run out of

30.The author compares self –control to muscles .

A. to prove the long-term effect of willpower

B. to show the significance of regular exercise

C. to argue that self-control can he easily used up

D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control

31.To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer?

A. I will give up dessert and do exercise.

B. I will set three goals this new semester.

C. I will read an English novel every month.

D. I will keep myself from any temptation.

Nearly every week, we hear news about the latest successes and failures in driverless vehicles. But we hear little about how other industries are developing this same kind of technology. One industry heavily involved in researching and developing artificial intelligence, or AI, is agriculture. Companies are experimenting with high-tech tools that can help farmers save time and money, while reducing environment-harming chemicals.

One of the companies is ecoRobotix of SwitzerLand, It created a robot equipped with AI and cameras to identify all plants on a farm The robot has four wheels to carry it through the fields in search of weeds. Computercontrolled arms then lower and spray the weeds with small amounts of herbicide(除草剂). Company officials say the robot can fully operate on its own for up to 12 hours a day while being powered by the sun It uses the same kind of sensor and positioning technology used to guide driverless vehicles. A farmer can also control the equipment through a smart-phone.

The co-founder of ecoRobotix, Aurelien Demaurex, says the farm robot can kill weeds with 20 times 1ess herbicide than traditional methods. This is because the system uses exactly the right amount of chemical in the exact place required to kill the weeds. Currently, farmers spread weed killers over massive areas to destroy unwanted plants.

Another company developing farm robotics is California-based Blue River Technology. The company has a system called "See & Spray", which it claims was the world's first smart sprayer. The system-which connects to the back of a tractor-is also equipped with AI to identify and chemically kill only the weeds. It can also spray chemicals on wanted plants to help them grow. Ben Chostner, vice-president of business development for Blue River Technology, explains in a company video that See & Spray technology uses the same deep Learning methods used in facial recognition. "The first time the machine saw a pigweed, it didn't know what kind of plant it was. But we taught it-by giving it tens of thousands of examples of that pigweed-and now it's an expert in pigweed. "

32.How will AI benefit agriculture?

A. It will fund agriculture research. B. It contributes to low-cost farming.

C. It can avoid harmful chemicals. D. It frees all farmers from field work.

33.What do the products of the two companies have in common?

A. They use recognition technology. B. They are powered by solar energy.

C. They are connected with smart phones. D. They can help wanted plants grow rapidly.

34.What do Ben Chostner's words suggest about the robot?

A. It is environmentally-friendly. B. It is good at self-improving.

C. It has the learning ability. D. It can track various plants.

35.What is mainly talked about in the text

A. The experiment in farming robots. B. New trend in artificial intelligence.

C. Modern See & Spray technology. D. Artificial intelligence in agriculture.
