　　With the IT revolution taking place, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture , politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into a large melting pot of
　　humanity. In this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.
　　China is now actively integrating into the world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the
　　importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From the precarious role in the world arena to our persent WTO menbership, we have come a long way. But what does the way ahead look like In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified then, in criticizing the globalzing world Instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables developed nations to swallow the
　　developing nations’ wealth in debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about an earnest interest in every other nation’s econnomic health.
　　We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond
　　national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality. Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favorable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government
　　decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market place and a devastating presence to local businesses.
　　For China , still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous worldAnd how to define

Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east and west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

　　接来自21世纪的科技挑战？ 前几天，我拜访了刚刚被评为博士生导师的北大化学系教授刘忠范老师。刘老师今年35岁，两年前从日本回到北大工作。在日本的刘老师，被誉为是最有希望摘取诺贝尔化学奖的青年学者，然而刘老师却放弃了被提名的殊荣，义无反顾地回到了自己的祖国。当我问起他时，他深思了一会儿，说：“我们国家现在面临着21世纪的机遇与挑战，要使我们民族真正实现第二次腾飞，关键在于科学技术的发展，而科学技术的发展又归根到底要落实到具体的科技工作者身上。是的，科学的确没有国界，但科学家一定要有祖国。我确实有机会长期留在国外，然而，我再一次选择了祖国，我属于这个地方，这里有我的梦想、我的青春、我的师友，在国外，我总是对这一切魂牵梦萦。我必须回到这里，正如自由的鱼儿总要回到赋予他生命的源头。我只能从这里再出发，再向前。为了祖国，我可以舍弃一切！”同学们，听了这朴实无华，但却感人至深的话语，你的感想又如何呢？其实，在北大，像这样的学者，像刘老师这样的年轻人，不知道又有多少！北大经济学院的萧琛教授放弃了世界银行的高级职位，一家三口局促于中关村的斗室之中。他说，我不后悔；中国经济研究中心的毕文容教授在接女儿的途中被车撞倒，女儿天真地问：“妈妈，咱们的汽车呢？”她说，我不后悔；哲学系的赵敦华教授，在比利时获得博士学位后立即启程回国，骑着一辆旧自行车的他也说：我不后悔！是的，他们都没有后悔，只因在他们的心中，从来都深藏着一份信念、一个精神、一种魂魄！一个真正的知识分子，必定是桑梓之地的崇拜者，对故国土地执着深沉的眷恋，使他们产生忧患难忘的情怀。正如季羡林先生所译《沙恭达罗》中那首著名的诗“你无伦走得多么远也不会走出我的心，正如黄昏时刻的树影，拖得再长也离不开树根。”这不正是从我们身边擦肩而过的那些可敬的学者们的最好的写照？ 同学们，今天演讲的主题是“迎接21世纪科学的技术挑战”，然而，当我准备这篇演讲的时候，我始终无法回避这样一个问题：“真正的挑战到底来自哪里！”我苦思冥想，却找不到一个满意的答案。后来，当我翻开《精神的魅力》这本书时，我终于明白了：其实，真正的挑战不是来自于我们的智力，中华民族被誉为是世界上最聪明的民族之一，我们的祖先创造出来的辉煌灿烂的古代文明历经千年之后，仍然令西方人艳羡不已；真正的挑战也不是来自于我们的科技实力。事实上，伟大的李约瑟博士在他不朽的著作《中国科学技术史》中早已指出中华民族的科技创造力是无穷的；真正的挑战更不是来自于享廷顿所谓的“文明的冲突”。拥有五千年悠久历史的华夏文明从来不畏惧任何外来文明的冲击。我想，真正的挑战恰恰来自于我们的内心深处，来自于我们是否能够真正地继承和发扬那深埋在我们内心的生生不息的民族之魂！当光怪陆离的物质世界不断发展的时候，人们的精神家园却日见花果飘零；当日新月异的科学技术不断取得进步时候，人们的精神世界却日见贫瘠匮乏；当我们为华人所取得的每一个成就而欢呼雀跃的时候，却往往苦涩地发现，他们其实是美国人！今天，摆在人类面前的问题，不仅仅是如何去求得物质的最大化，而是如何去获得精神上的归属感，如何在精神与物质上取得双丰收；今天要使中国21世纪的科学技术真正具有原创力，真正获得长足的发展，也不仅仅只是如何去求得知识硬件构造的完美，而是如何在重视科技自身建设的同时，去重新建构人类精神的伊甸园，使人类从非理性回到理性的轨道。真正的挑战恰恰是来自于我们自身。我想这才是二十一世纪科技挑战的真正含义。 前几天，在北大物理文化节的开幕式上，应邀前来的李政道先生面对近千名北大学子，发表了热情洋溢满怀深情的演讲。他说：“二十一世纪是中国人的世纪，祖国的腾飞就在诸位青年学人身上。作为一个科学家，首先要有严谨的科学精神，但更重要的是要热爱自己的祖国，要有一个精神的归属，要有一条自己的根。二十一世纪人类最大的悲剧就是在取得科学与技术的巨大发展之后，人类的精神世界却全面面临着空虚、绝望、不安全与非理性，这是人类历经痛苦的浩劫之后所得出的最深刻的教训。”他说：“今天每一个炎黄子孙都应力图使自己成为一个理想主义者，缺乏浪漫主义气质、利己实用的民族是衰败、凋谢、可悲的民族，我对中华民族的崛起充满信心。中华大地，对我们是一片崇高的圣址，这儿埋藏着中国人祖祖辈辈的欢乐与悲哀，也埋藏着我们少儿时所心爱
