"Well," the trainer said, "when they were very young and much smaller, we used the same rope to keep them from running away. At that age, it's enough to hold them. I was cute, active and happy until that day when I was 15 months old. I had a bad fall. I landed on a glass rabbit and cut one of my eyes badly enough to blind me. The doctor said that if the eye was taken out, my face would look worse, so my scared and blind eye lives on with me. People often ask me uncomfortable questions about my eye or even play jokes on me. When the kids played games, I was always the "bad guy". Everyone looked down on me. Friendship can help you stick to your aims and make you more successful, according to an article in Times.
Carlin Flora, the writer, who has studied friendship for years, finds that if you really want to change something in your life, you can develop friendship with people who have the same aims as you do.
Friends can help make your own will stronger. Following good examples can help you get rid of bad behaviors and form new, healthier ones. For example, after a busy and tiring day, you probably want to go home and watch TV. However, your friend knocks on your door and asks you to go jogging with him. After jogging, you talk over coffee together. This is much better than just sitting in the room watching TV.
Flora also points out that it's best to stop bad habits by turning attention to different, good ones. Instead of staying at home alone and spending hours in front of your computer, building up friendship with those who have the values and habits you admire will lift you up more easily. We all wish to be with, and be liked by our friends. When you have friendship with people with strong wills and good behaviors, you will not only succeed more easily, but also find joy on your journey.

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives( 观点 by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in. With this belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people's writing can one discover what works, what doesn't and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read books. Reading
reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime. 1What can be inferred about the author as a child?

A. He never watched TV. B. He found reading unbelievable. C. He considered reading part of his life. D. He read what he had to.
2The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means “________”.

A. a belief B. a way of writing C. a sound quality D. a world to write about 3What effect does reading have on the author?

A. It opens up a wider world for him. B. It helps him to realize his dream. C. It makes his college life more interesting. D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel. 4Which of the following can be the best title of this text?

A. How do I read? B. What do I read? C. Why do I read? D. When do I read?

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing知,作者从小生活在一个很少开电视,却有很多书的家庭里,他童年的大多数时候都是在读书中度过的,他觉得读书就像呼吸一样的自然。
Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with.
Reading reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime可知,阅读对于作者来说是非常重要的,它可带着

The event was a swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them made mistake when they started, so they were kicked out. That would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is what’s important.
I watch the man jump into the water and knew right away that something was wrong. Now I’m not an expert swimmer but I do know a good jump from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he was swimming, the crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor.
I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man that was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. He tried his best, but clearly he was exhausted.
But when they saw the man keeping on trying , they stopped laughing and beginning to cheer. Some even to stand and say: “Come , you can do it!” and “ Go for it
A few minutes later ,this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors. Just a short year ago, he had never swam, let alone raced. His country had been asked to Sydney as manners.
In a competition where players remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been
cheated out of gold, or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors, it is nice to watch this game.
