Mrs. Janes gave music lessons at a school. She had a good voice and enjoyed singing, except that some of her high tones sound like a gate that had forgotten to oil. Mrs. Janes knew her weakness well, and took every chance she could find to practise these high notes. As she lived in a small house, where she could not practise without disturbing the rest of the family, she usually went for long walks along the country roads whenever she had time and practised her high notes there. Whenever she heard a car or a person coming along the road, she stopped and waited until she could no longer be heard before she started practicing again, because she was a shy person.

Even before my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, “Mom, I can’t peel(剥皮) potatoes. I have only one hand.” Mom never looked up from sewing. “You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,” she told me. “And don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”

In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging from one high steel rod() to the

next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying.

That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me, and I saw her “we’ll see about that” look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars.

“Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She stood by as I struggled to lift myself with my right hand until I could hook (钩住)the bar with my other elbow. Day after day we practiced, and she praised me for every rung I reached. I’ll never forget the next time, crossing the rungs(横档), I looked down at the kids who were standing with their mouths open.

One night, after a dance at my new junior high, I lay in bed sobbing. I could hear Mom come into my room. “Mom,” I said, weeping, “none of the boys would dance with me.”

For a long time, I didn’t hear anything. Then she said, “Oh, honey, someday you’ll be beating those boys off the bat.” Her voice was faint and cracking. I peeked out from my covers to see tears running down her cheeks. Then I knew how much she suffered on my behalf. She had never let me see her tears. “Oh, Mom, I love you!”

Parts of the Great Wall may collapse (倒塌) and disappear in the near future unless protection efforts are improved, an expert has warned.

Only about 20 per cent of the 6,300-kilometre wall is in reasonable shape, another 30 per cent is in ruins, and the rest has disappeared forever, the China Great Wall Society, a non-governmental organiz- ation that fights forrepair of the wall, announced.

The remains of the wall is "in danger of collapse" because of weathering, erosion ( 风化 ) and human damage, said DongYaohui, secretary-general of the society.

Dong has just finished a 35-day inspection tour of the Great Wall from Shanhaiguan in the east to Jiayuguan in the west. He said he was upset to find that although longtime weathering and erosion have changed the inner structure of many sections of the wall, roots of wild plants have made brick crevices (裂缝) even larger, "no rescue efforts have been, made." In some areas dust can be as thick as one meter, providing suitable growing conditions for wild plants.

Human damage is also hastening the collapse of the wall. In a village, almost all pigsties (猪圈) and henhouses are built of bricks stolen from the wall. In some areas near the wall, local villagers have "dug coal mines under the wall. And unprofessional repair often does more harm than good.

Dong said a few sections of the Great Wall are listed as conservation sites at the moment, but the majorities, especially those in rural areas, receive no attention at all. To make matters worse, there are no laws to punish people who damage sections that ate not consetwation sites.

The central government plans to conduct an inspection of the whole Great Wall to measure its exact length this year. Dong said that the State Council might pass a law on protection of the Great Wall by the end of this year.

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a great bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However, bridge building experts thought that this was an impossible project and told Roebling to forget it. But Roebling could not ignore the vision of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an engineer, that the bridge could be built.

The father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the difficulties could be overcome. After that, they began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway (在进行中) a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which made him unable to walk or talk or even move.

Everyone had a negative comment since the Roeblings were the only one who knew how to build the bridge. In spite of these difficulties, Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge. It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was to move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving it, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. The project was under way again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed.

Today the Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory to the victory of one man's determination not to be defeated by circumstances.
