Some time ago, I discovered a whole lot of antique(古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair that had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.

The second shop, although slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth — so I thought that my approach must be wrong.

I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes. How much do you want do it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK” he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It has a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that; it’s nothing.”

Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me.” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I’m sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right.” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’” “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for five pounds?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

24We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer ________.

A. was rather impolite B. asked the shopkeeper to repair his chair

C. asked the shopkeeper to buy his chair D. was warmly welcomed

25Why did the writer said “Would you like to buy a chair?” in the fifth shop?

A. He wanted to make some money by selling the chair.

B. He had a plan in mind about how to get his chair mended.

C. He was sure that he won’t be able to have the chair repaired.

D. He planned to get a new chair after selling the broken one.

26The expression “the penny dropped” in the last paragraph means the shopkeeper ________.

A. changed his mind B. accepted the offer

C. decided to help the writer D. saw the writer’s purpose

27How much will the writer pay?

A. £20 B. £7 C. £5 D. £27

C

The quality of our seafood has been in the news a lot lately. A new study has found that people who eat seafood are also eating plastic — 11,000 pieces of microplastic(微塑料) per year to be exact.

Researchers at the University of Ghent in Belgium found that seafood eaters are consuming plastic at a concerning rate.

“Per serving of mussels (贻贝), which contains about 300 grams of mussel meat, you get 300 pieces of plastic inside your body,” researchers wrote. Researchers don’t yet know the implications of eating microplastic, but they worry that it could have negative consequences on our health.

While we don’t know what microplastic does yet to humans, we do know what it does to sea animals. In earlier studies, scientists have found that when fish eat microplastics, it prevents their growth and changes their feeding patterns. In fact, fish will stop eating natural sources of nutrients, and only go for plastic.

When you’re done using plastic, a small portion (部分) may be recycled. However, more than likely it’s in a landfill or making its way towards the ocean. Once rubbish hits the water, sea creatures may mistake it for food. This often leads to poisoning or death. If they get caught for human’s food, the plastic may very well make its way back to you — on your dinner plate.

According to a study published in Science magazine, eight million tons of plastic go into our waterways every year. The problem is so serious that scientists say that by 2050 the weight of plastic in our oceans will outweigh fish. And just because it’s out of sight, it doesn’t mean it should be out of mind.

There’s no immediate way to prevent microplastic from ending up in your body. However, you can help reduce the amount of plastic reaching rivers, lakes and oceans in the first place. You can make a difference with your choices every day. Even small changes will add up. While your dinner may contain microplastic, you can help prevent the future generations from having that same problem.

28. What does the underlined word “implications” probably mean?

A. Real functions. B. Potential benefits.

C. Logical reasons. D. Possible effects.

29. What do we learn about microplastics in the oceans?

A. Fish tend to be addicted to them. B. Fish are sick and tired of them.

C. They make fish grow quickly. D. They don’t affect fish’s eating habits.

30. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?

A. You will pay for what you have done.

B. Sea creatures eat different foods.

C. You get what you pay for.

D. Plastic can’t be digested(消化) by sea animals.

31. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?

A. To give us a final warning. B. To call on us for action.

C. To offer us a brief summary. D. To send us a gentle reminder.

D

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier.

These are the findings of a 40year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”

Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mentalhealth scores with their boyhoodactivity scores. Points were awarded for parttime jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.

Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the foundations of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work towards common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”

32What do we know about John?

AHe enjoyed his career and marriage.

BHe had few childhood playmates.

CHe received little love from his family.

DHe was envied by others in his childhood.

33Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________

Aa description of personal values and social values

Ban analysis of how work was related to competence

Can explanation why some boys grew into happy men

Dan example for parents' expectations of their children

34What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?

AClear and definite. BHaving a thin edge(边缘).

CQuick to react. DSudden and rapid.

35What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

ACompetent adults know more about love than work.

BWork and love are both important to a wonderful adult life.

CLove brings more joy to people than work does.

DIndependence is the key to one's success.
