A

My First Day at School

It's been over 12 years since I had such a day. I felt usual butterflies and excitement of a fresh start. I was in a room full of people like me, students who have dreams, ideas and fears like I do. I

met people from Russia, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Malawi, Canada and the U.S.

I felt welcome. I met quite a few professors and tried to express my goals for my studies. I told

the story of how I came to be at the University of Edinburgh and how my husband was here to support me. Each first year postgraduate student talked about how they got here. Student leaders made us know the secrets to the bus and rail system, as well as how to make a buy-one-get-one-free deal in restaurants all over town. Thank the Lord for knocking off pounds

We toured the library. going up and down many stairs and seeing quite a few study rooms. Each student was assigned( 分配)a study space where we could leave our books. Many students who had been here for a year or more told me they came in at 9 and left at 5, like a regular job. Students decorated their study spaces, I saw one with a white board that laid out his or her progress and one with a little bookcase to hold his or her books. Students decorated their cubicles(小间隔)to their personalities. The strong desire to learn and adapt is common.

My school’s student body is different, yet there is also commonality. Each person has come,

often from afar, to study and research in their area of interest, but we all have come to learn

On the Internet, what would our life be like without you? We certainly wouldn'1 be immediately messaging someone we met at Machu Picchu six years ago. We wouldn’t be able to design a sentence using only emojis lik or. Before the Internet, there was no such thing asunfriendingsomeone.

We no longer require homes, bars, offices or cafes to keep in touch with people. We can do it

anywhere we happen to be. This leads to the question: when we connect ourselves to our devices, are we disconnecting from people around us? Are we hiding behind a screen from the physical world? For better or worse, here are a few of the ways the Internet is changing the way we communicate.

Online relationships. Online dating becomes cool -it removed the embarrassment of forever-alone sitting at home imaging long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners. According to

The New York Times, about 50 million people use Tinder every month. Outside of Tinder, online

dating has increased rapidly on platforms like RSVP and OkCupid. Gradually, dating online is just

like meeting someone at a bar these days.

Everyone is an expert. The blogger vs. journalist debate has been very hot lately. While blogs

Are seen by their readership as an authentic(原汁原味) channel of communication bloggers

knowledge is often called into question by those, journalists, for example, who have taken a more

traditional route to get where they are. Thanks to the Internet, anyone with a keyboard can say anything they want.

Social media. It has enabled us to communicate with a much larger number of people all over

the globe. While this is great when it comes to keeping friendships alive over great distances, it also increases the demand for keeping a much larger number of relationships going at the same time.

No matter whether the Internet has changed communication for worse or better, there is no doubt that it plays a major role in our lives today. So make sure you keep up with the latest technologies!

24. The first two paragraphs mainly talk about_____________.

A. the advantages the Internet has created B. the progress the Internet has made

C. the lessons we learn from the Internet D. the effect the Internet has on our life

25. According to the passage, Tinder is______.

C. a long walk on the beach D. a platform for online dating

26. Which of the following can best describe the author s attitude towards the Internet?

A. Unconcerned B. Supportive C, Doubtful D. Negative

C

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life,

but tanners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter altogether.

Road politeness is not only good runners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed

drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of and calm so necessary in modern traffic condition. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical(e典型的)examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.

Unfortunately, modem drivers can’t even learn to drive. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast

increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

27. According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by_____.

A. road conditions B. the speed of modern life

C. the behavior of the drivers D. the large number of car

28. In the writer’s opinion______.

A. drivers should avoid traffic jams B. strict traffic rules are badly needed

C. unskillful drivers should be punished D. drivers should show road politeness properly

29. The underlined word give and-lake in the passage means_______.

A. politeness and impoliteness

B. willingness to give in lo each other's wishes

C. offering help to others as much as possible

D. good manners and bad manners

30. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Road Politeness B. Traffic Problems

C. Bad Manners on the Road D. Good Driver and Bad Driver

I remember my first home, a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious

Maria(阳台). When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the

kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent, she was like a mother. to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations(康乃馨)in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.

He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was

watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems

(茎)were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.

My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley(插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. "No one should touch them", he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.

Mom used to tell us: "Do not touch daddy’s flowers." For us it was a fascinating experience to

watch how the small stems sterns were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.
