In his youth, Zarko worked as a steelworker in Zenica, but decided to try his luck in

Germany after he divorced 30 years ago. He worked different jobs for many years, but 10 years

ago he was sent back to Bosnia for working and living in Germany illegally. Unfortunately,

Zarko's apartment had been destroyed during the Bosnian War. With no savings to buy a new

place, and no one to turn to for help, he eventually ended up in a small mountainside cave that

had once been used by miners to store explosives. It was meant to be a temporary arrangement,

but he's been living there for 10 years.

Zarko never asked for help from the state. He has survived on his own, and despite the

obvious downsides(缺点) of living in a cave for such a long time, he says that there are benefits as well. "People always find something to fight about, so it' s better to live alone," Zarko says, although he isn't technically by himself. He shares his modest home with 13 deserted dogs which he feeds every day with bones from the local butcher shop.

He usually checks the dustbins three times a day, and almost always finds something to

eat, but on bad days, he can buy himself some food with the money he makes by cutting wood

for the locals.

The caveman says he likes his home, but also admits that he looks forward to getting his

pension in three years. He says he' s in good health and can definitely survive another three

Germany. He hopes to be able to finally afford a proper home.

For most people, plastic bags are a necessity of any shopping trip. They might seem like

an innocent way to carry groceries, but dealing with these bags can be harmful for the

environment.

It' s reported that the world uses about 500 billion plastic bags each year and fewer than

3% are recycled. Plastic bags that end up in oceans and beaches are harmful to fish, birds,

and other animals. As a result, cities and states have been trying for years to find a way to get

people to cut back on using plastic bags.

This year, New York City was prepared to add a 5-cent tax on the use of paper or plastic

bags in stores, but Governor Andrea Cuomo signed a law that blocked(反对) the tax. Cuomo

said the tax idea was "deeply faulty" because it would have allowed store owners to keep the

money from the tax instead of putting it toward environmental efforts. Cuomo announced plans

to create a task force to look into the plastic-bag problem. By the end of the year, the task

force may suggest a statewide ban of plastic bags, a tax on them, or something entirely new.

Several cities around the country have either banned plastic bags or charged a fee for their

use. In Washington, D. C.the charge is 5 cents per bag. Since the fee started there, the number of plastic bags on the streets and waterways dropped by 60%. Seattle, Washington, has banned plastic carryout bags and charges a minimum of 5 cents for paper. Chicago, Illinois, will soon add a 7-cent tax on paper and plastic bags.

In New York, some politicians who thwarted, a tax say it puts, too much to tress on low-income citizens and working families. They argue that those people need the money to spend on food, not on bags. .

28. What do the majority of people think of plastic bags?

A. They are easy to be recycled.

B. They do little harm to wild animals.

C. Shopping can' t be done without them.

D. Handling them benefits the environment.

29. Why did Andrea Cuomo sign a law against the bag tax?

A. Because he thought it was quite imperfect.

B. Because he thought it was something new.

C. Because he thought it would affect the sales of bags.

D. Because he thought it would increase consumers' burden.

30. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A. The higher bag fees are, the better.

B. Paper bags will eventually replace plastic bags.

C. More states in the USA will ban the use of plastic ones.

D. Charging bag fees helped decrease the use of plastic bags.

31. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "thwarted" in the last paragraph?

The artists in Madhubani district of India have been painting trees and leaves, with coats

of lively colors describing pictures of Hindu deities (), In the past three years since the

painting campaign was started, many trees in that area which normally were the targets for local villagers have been spared the axe (斧子). The artists' logic was that the description of

deities on trees would stop people from cutting trees and the idea has proved successful.

The tree art, in the style of the world-famous Madhubani painting, has now made the entire area so beautiful that passers-by can' t resist taking photos. Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, is a style of Indian painting practised in northeastern region of Bihar which is done with fingers, brushes and even-matchsticks using natural colors and is characterised by eye-catching patterns. " Normally, the Hindus respect trees but they almost stopped cutting them once we painted the tree trunks with different pictures of deities," Siya Devi, one of the artists associated with the tree painting campaign, says. " Previously, the sight of people cutting roadside trees was quite common. Now this gives us much satisfaction to see the crowds of tourists paying visits to this particular area to see the painted trees and take photos. "

The idea is the brainchild of a local villager Shashthi Nath Jha who has been working for the women empowerment(贼权) and restoration of child labor.

The sight of people cutting trees with axes and saws(锯)always gave me a lot of pain. I

tried to convince them this wasn't good for environment but they never took it seriously. So I finally thought upon the plan to paint scenes from Hindu classics or pictures of Gods on the tree

barks thinking it can work significantly, and yes, it has begun working now," claims Jha who

works for Gram Vikas Parishad, a non-governmental organization.

32. What does the text suggest about the tree art?

A. It makes no use of artificial colors.

B. It cannot be done without brushes.

C.lt is a style popular throughout India.

D. It focuses on traditional Indian festivals.

33. According to the text, Shashthi Nath Jha

B. is strongly against child labor

C. is the designer of a local village

D. is the creator of the painting campaign

34. What can be inferred about the plan from Jha's words?

A. It has freed him from pain. B. It came quite easily to him.

C. It is as effective as expected. D. It hasn't been taken seriously.

35. What can be the best title for the text?

A.A new art form-tree art.

change how you react to the situation.

what stress-relief techniques have worked well for them. And remember to keep a healthy

lifestyleeat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. It will help you manage

periods of high stress.

40 And stress management isn't an overnight cure. But with practice, you can learn
