Dear Friend,

The recent success of children's books has made the general public aware that there's a huge market out there.

And there's a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children's books bought each year ... plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers.

Who are these needed writers? They're ordinary folks like you and me.

But am I good enough?

I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didn't know where to turn for help.

Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing aptitude(潜能), and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed.

The promise that paid off

The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability:

You will complete at least one manuscript(手稿) suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course.

I really didn't expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute.

Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published children's books and over 300 stories and articles.

Free test and brochure

We offer a free aptitude test and will send you a copy of our brochure describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training.

Realize your writing dream today. There's nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever.

Sincerely,

Kristi

Have you ever heard of a great Chilean poet? He was once referred to as the Picasso of poetry. Beloved by Chileans of all classes, he is one of the most widely read and respected poets in history. And the year 2013 is the 110th birthday of Pablo Neruda (1904-1973).

Born with the name Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basolto, he was a tall, shy and lonely boy. He loved to read and started to write poetry when he was ten. The American poet Walt Whitman, whose framed picture Neruda later kept on his table, became a major influence on his work.

However, his father did not like the idea of having a poet for a son and tried to discourage him from writing. To cover up the publication of his first poem, he took the pen name Pablo Neruda.

In 1924 Neruda gained fame with his most widely read work “Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’’. Yet his rich experience as a diplomat and exile( 被流放者) made him go beyond the theme of love. His work also reflected the political struggle of the left and development of South America. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.

Neruda loved the sea which he saw as creative, destructive and forever moving. He found inspiration in the power and freedom of the waves and the seabirds on the coast. “I need the sea because it teaches me,” he wrote. “I move in the university of the waves.” He loved how the sea forever renewed itself, a renewal echoed (共鸣) in his work.

D. literary greats usually used the pen name

6. Which of the following is NOT the theme of his works?

A. Social reform.

B. Love.

C. Political struggle.

D. Development of South America.

7. The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A. Neruda loved to write his poems near the sea

B. Neruda’s poems were widely read overseas

C. the beautiful scenery along the Chile coast

D. the sea gave Neruda vast writing inspiration

Everywhere I look outside my home I see people busy on their high-tech devices ( 装置 ), while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting on toilets. When connected electronically, they are away from physical reality.

People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that “addicted” was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol.

The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.

I see people trapped in a flu-like relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money.

What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if they are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for claiming the wisdom that “Too much of a good thing is wonderful.”  But it’s time to discover that it does not work for technology.

Richard Fernandez, a former CEO at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.”  To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today’s overused technology.

8. The underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.

A. advantage              B. attempt   C. adaptation          D. attraction

9. From the passage, technology companies aim to ______.

A. attract people to buy their products          B. provide the latest information

C. improve people’s quality of life            D. deal with cultural diseases

10. It can be inferred from this passage that people ______.

A. consider too much technology wonderful

B. may enjoy life better without overused technology

C. can regain freedom without high-tech devices

D. have realized the harm of high-tech devices

11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices?

A. Objective          B. Positive

C. Disapproving        D. Sympathetic

Moving in with a boyfriend causes women to eat more unhealthily and put on weight. But the opposite is true for men, whose long-term health benefits when they move in with a female partner.

Dieticians at Newcastle University said both partners try to please one another, and so change their dietary habits to suit their other half.

It leads men to eat more light meals, such as salads, fruit and vegetables, while women choose to make creamier, heavier dishes like curry or rich pasta sauces, which may please their partners.

Women still have the strongest long-term influence over the couple's diet and lifestyle, as they still have the traditional role of shopper and cook in most households.

The report, by Newcastle University's Human Nutrition Research Centre, reviewed the finding of a variety of research projects from the UK, North America and Australia, which looked at the eating and lifestyle habits of couples.

The research shows that women are more likely to put on weight and increase their consumption of foods high in fat and sugar when they move in with their partners.

Women also use food as a comfort when dealing with emotional stress and have been found to gain weight when a relationship ends, while the same finding has not been observed in men.

Many couples reported food as being central to their partnership, and eating together in the evening was particularly important to many.

Report author and registered dietician Dr. Amelia Lake said, "The research has shown that your partner is a strong influence on lifestyle and people who are trying to live healthier lives should take this factor into consideration.”

12. According to the passage, moving in with a girlfriend, men _______.

A. have few changes of their dietary habits

B. have to eat more unhealthy foods

C. don’t like foods high in fat and sugar at all

D. try to eat foods that their girlfriends like

13. According to the report by Newcastle University’s Human Nutrition Research Centre, ______.

A. eating together in the evening is a good way to communicate for couples

B. when men are faced with emotional stress, they will change their dietary habits

C. women put on weight only because they want to suit their other half

D. it is wrong to change your dietary habits to suit your partner

14. From the passage, we can infer that _________.

A. couples will not change their dietary habits and lifestyle to please each other

B. more men will play roles of shopper and cook in most households

C. women should pay more attention to their partners’ influence on them

D. long-term health of men benefits when they move in with a female partner

15. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Don’t be silly any more, women! B. Which are better dietary habits?

书面表达

Dear William,

Recently, I have heard that you feel stressed as a student of Senior Three. Here is some advice on how to study effectively.

First of all, learn in a relaxing way. This will remove our pressure, making study an easy job. Another way to keep up our spirits is to take part in sports. Not only does exercise build up the body, but also it provides us time to relax and fresh our mind, making us memorize things faster and longer. Music, too, is another effective means of refreshing and helping us concentrate better.

Last but not least, we should exchange ideas with our classmates. Through the communication we can find support, which will encourage us to overcome difficulties in our study.

I Hope these can benefit you.

Best wishes!

                                                                 Yours,

Li Hua
