The term mood refers to how we feel at a particular time. But our mood cannot be totally under our control. They may be affected by many factors. Believe it or not, the colors we see may affect our mood. People feel differently when they see different colors.

The colors yellow and orange make people feel happier. People say those who like yellow or orange must be optimistic and active and those who like blues and greens must be calm and shy. Red is the color of fire, and it attracts peoples attention in a distance. It is such a strong color that sometimes it makes people nervous. Blues and greens, on the contrary, are like McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken, avoid greens and blues, because those colors tend to make people take longer over meals.

In the past, many people used horses for traveling, farming and other kinds of work. A lot of people still like to ride horses. And horse racing is also popular. So it is not surprising that Americans use this animal when they talk.

Long ago, rich or important people rode horses which were very tall. Today, if a girl acts like she is better than everyone else, you might say she should get off her high horse.

Yesterday my children wanted me to take them to the playground. But I had to finish my work, so I said, “Hold your horses. Wait until I finish what I am doing.” My two boys like to compete against each other and play in a noisy and not very careful way. I always tell them to stop horsing around or someone could get hurt.

Last night, I got a telephone call while I was watching my favorite TV show. I decided not to answer it because wild horses could not drag (, ) me away from the television. There was nothing that could stop me from doing what I wanted to do.

Sometimes you get information straight from the horse's mouth. Let us say your teacher told you there was going to be a test tomorrow. You could say you got the information straight from the horse's mouth.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. That means you can give someone advice but you cannot force him to do something he does not want to do.

Almost everyone knows that water covers 75% of the earths surface. Most of it, however, is in the oceans and is too salty to drink. Also, some of it is frozen and cannot be used. In fact, less than 1% is left for the use of people, animals and plant life.

All through history men have tried to build their homes near the sources of fresh water. Now fresh water is becoming less and less, but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of people in the world. Some industries also use large amounts of fresh water in the production of such things as steel, paper and synthetic rubber (合成橡胶).

What we must do is to find new ways of saving or producing fresh water. Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their information with others. They are trying to keeping their rivers from becoming polluted. Deep wells are also being dug, and rain water is being collected in huge man-made lakes. In one way or another, they hope to offer enough water to satisfy the needs of their people.

One important way to have fresh water is to make it from sea water. Several processes can be used, but distillation (蒸馏) seems to be the most common one. The salty sea water is heated in trays (容器) until a vapor (蒸汽) rises, leaving the salt. When the vapor cools, it becomes water again, good enough to drink. When the salt has been removed, the sea water can be used not only for drinking but also for industry and irrigation (灌溉).

In some parts of the world, people are in trouble. They need food, water and new homes. Large groups like the International Red Cross are always the first to offer help. But thousands of other small groups who are not so well-known also give help to those who need it.

Heifer International hopes to offer help to those hungry people. It is a huge goal, but they are working on it, one family at a time. The organization gives animals such as cows, goats and chickens to families in need. A cow can produce about fifteen liters () of milk a day. Often that is enough for a family to drink and still have some to sell. The families receive an animal and learn how to care for their animal. Each family also agrees to give away one of their animal's babies to someone else in need. This keeps the “gift” going. As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric(生物测量)technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.

Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device(装置)that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏)with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user's typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people's identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it's connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.

It also doesn't require a new type of technology that people aren't already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.

In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch”four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.

28. Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?

A. To reduce pressure on keys. B. To improve accuracy in typing

C. To replace the password system. D. To cut the cost of e-space protection.

29. What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible

During the rosy years of elementary school小学, I enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status. I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.

Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables’ plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there’s the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.

Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed, Dr. Prinstein’s studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are “most likely to engage从事in dangerous and risky behavior.”

In one study, Dr. Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys调查研究. “We found that the least well-liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us."

Dr. Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a play date-sharing, kindness, openness — carry over to later years and make you better able to relate and connect with others.

In analyzing his and other researchDr. Prinstein came to another conclusion: Not only is likability related to positive life outcomes, but it is also responsible for those outcomes, too. "Being liked creates opportunities for learning and for new kinds of life experiences that help somebody gain an advantage, ” he said.

32. What sort of girl was the author in her early years of elementary school?

A. Unkind. B. Lonely. C. Generous. D. Cool.

A. The classification of the popular.

B. The characteristics of adolescents.

C. The importance of interpersonal skills.

D. The causes of dishonorable behavior.

34. What did Dr. Prinstein’s study find about the most liked kids?

A. They appeared to be aggressive.

B. They tended to be more adaptable.

C. They enjoyed the highest status.

D. They performed well academically.

35. What is the best title for the text?

A. Be Nice-You Won’t Finish Last
