We live in a digital world now, and a student's technology needs have changed. For the early years, say when you are in primary school, you can get by with no technology at all. Even if you have a computer, it's a good idea to get children familiar with libraries. At this age, trips to the library are like family outings.

As you get closer to middle school, a computer with Internet access(入口)becomes more of a necessity. Teachers will often give assignments(作业) that require a student to use the Internet for research. After a computer, technology choices for students become more difficult to make – especially when it comes to cell-phones. Kids will beg their parents for a cell-phone, especially in middle school. For many parents, it's a safety issue: They want to know that their kids can reach them quickly if necessary. For teachers, cell phones can be used to record lessons when students are absent. But many teachers dislike cell-phones. Some kids send messages or have talks in the class. Sending messages also raises the problem of cheating on exams. More and more schools are now forbidding(禁止) the use of cell-phones.

Many kids see iPads as necessary things to have. IPads are great for music, but do they do anything good for your children’s education? Maybe they do. That’s the opinion of Doug Johnson, an educator for 30 years. Johnson says that educators should accept all new forms of technology in the classroom, including iPads. “Some do more with their cell- phones than we can do with our laptops,” he jokes. “I don’t think we should be afraid. The truth is that it’s easier to change the way we teach than to change the technology habits of an entire generation.”

24. Why do parents agree to buy their children cell-phones?

A. They want their children to be cool.

B. They want to keep in touch with their children.

C. They think cell-phones be helpful to their study.

D. They want their children to keep up to date.

25. The following are all reasons why many teachers dislike cell-phones EXCEPT _____.

A. cell-phones can be used to record lessons

B. cell-phones can be used to cheat on exams

C. schoolchildren will send messages during class

D. schoolchildren might talk on them during class

26. What does the underlined word “that” refers to?

A. iPads can be used to listen to music.

B. iPads can be used to play games.

C. iPads can be helpful for children’s education.

D. iPads are necessary for children’s lives.

27. We can infer from what Doug Johnson said that ______.

A. cell-phones are not useful to students

B. teachers should let students use cell-phones

C. schoolchildren should follow the trends (潮流) of fashion

D. it’s better for teachers to change their teaching methods

C

Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle —named the Transition – has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.

Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit(存款) to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000. And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.

Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.

Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.

28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A. The basic data of the Transition. B. The advantages of flying cars.

C. The potential market for flying cars. D. The designers of the Transition.

29. Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?

A. It causes traffic jams. B. It is difficult to operate.

C. It is very expensive. D. It burns too much fuel.

30. What is the government’s attitude to the development of the flying car?

A. Cautious B. Favorable. C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.

31. What is the best title for the text?

A. Flying Car at Auto Show B. The Transition’s First Flight

C. Pilots’ Dream Coming True D. Flying Car Closer to Reality

D

Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.

Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.

High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.

The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.

Inactivity increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

32. According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean?

A. Helping teens learn to make good plans.

B. Removing the stress faced by teens at school.

C. Making teens attach(认为) importance to exercise later.

D. Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.

33. What does the underlined word “hindered” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. Measured. B. Prevented. C. Shown. D. Caused.

34. According to the PCFSN, doing sports ______.

A. means making students choose between sports and studies

B. helps students make good use of all their time

C. means students adjust to their studies better

D. helps students do better in their studies

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. How high school students can live a better life.

B. How schools can help students love doing sports.

C. Why some schools consider physical education important.

D. Why high school students should receive physical education.

Do you want to be at the top of your class? Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!

Pay attention to everything the teacher says. I can’t stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worthwhile to add. 36 .

Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he/she writes on the board, or any special fact you think you might need for a test. 37 . This way it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.

Don’t skip school. You will be missing out on stuff. 38 . However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures and in-class movies. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.

Keep a good attitude towards things. 39 , then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems or offer you extra credit. The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students. Try not to laugh when other students make a mistake.

40 . There is no shame in needing some help. If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, seek help. Ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc. Get a tutor if you need one.

A. Enjoy your class

B. Always ask questions

C. Write in your own words

D. When you do poorly in your study

E. It is true that you could make up the work

F. If you have an “I don’t care about study attitude

【作文】参考答案

Dear sir or madam,

I'm a student from the NO. 1 Middle School of Ning Yang. I'm writing in the hope that I can get the job.

I think I'm fit for the job. As a student, I've read a lot and have much knowledge in many fields. I'm fond of English and do well in both speaking and writing. Besides, I'm easy to get along with and enjoy working together with others. Above all, I once worked as a reporter for my school broadcasting station. So I'm sure I can do the job well if I get the position.

I'm looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

       Linda

Text 10

I was walking around the other day when I saw a sign(招牌) for The Bookworm. It’s a really cool café that has great food, (17) and sometimes they have music and other special events. Well, I happened to hear that Peter Hessler was going to be speaking at 7:30 that very night. Peter Hessler is probably my favorite writer at the moment. He used to write about China for The New Yorker, and he also wrote 3 books about his experiences living and working in Beijing. I was so excited to hear him speaking that I went right over to The Bookworm at 7:00, (18) (19) took a seat at the bar, and waited for him to arrive. I waited and waited, but he didn’t show up.
