Merkel has twice been named the world's second most powerful person by Forbes magazine, the highest ranking ever achieved by a woman.

In December 2015, Merkel was named as Time magazine's Person of the Year, with the magazine's cover declaring her to be the "Chancellor of the Free World.

In 2016, following the election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, Merkel was described by The New York Times as "the Liberal West's Last Defender"[71] and by Timothy Garton Ash as "the leader of the free world."[72] U.S. President Barack Obama described her in 2016 as his "closest international partner" throughout his tenure as President.

As First Lady of the United States, Clinton led the unsuccessful effort to enact the Clinton health care plan of 1993. In 1997 and 1999, she helped create the State Children's Health Insurance Program. She also tackled the problems ofadoption and family safety and foster care. At the 1995 UN conference on women (held in Beijing), Clinton stated in a then controversial and influential speech, that "human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights". 

She has appeared in Time's 100 most influential people in the world (2010 and 2015), Forbes'top-earning women in music (2011–2015), Forbes' 100 most powerful women (2015) and Forbes Celebrity 100 (2016). She was the youngest woman to be included in the third of these and ranked first in Celebrity 100.
