When Americans Kay and Larry Day found a store selling kites nearly 20 years ago, they decided to buy a few kites for their family. For fun, Larry bought one for himself. “He went out and flew it and decided to go back and add more fun to the event,” Kay remembered.

Since then, she and her husband have loved kite flying. They own many kites and plan trips around flying them. They also organize a kite-flying event each winter in their hometown in Iowa. “I'm at peace when I'm flying a kite,” said Larry.

Kite-flying has a long history as an activity for adults and children. The custom of flying a piece of cloth high in the sky began more than 2,000 years ago in China. Since then, kites have been used to do scientific experiments, power boats, take pictures from the air and much more.

“Sometimes, the best flying conditions happen in winter —on a frozen lake,” said Kay Day, who with her husband organizes the Color the Wind Kite Festival. It takes place every February on Clear Lake in Iowa. “The festival adds color to the winter sky and gives people a reason to go outside,” she added. The Days invite expert fliers to come and share their love for kites with locals and visitors. This year, more than 100 children attended a kite-making class. “Kiters are a really good group of people. It’s a family,” said Larry.

Kay says that the love for kites can spread to others easily. She says her two children, Dylan, and Cardin, started flying kites about three years ago after attending a kite festival they held. People become addicted to many things. Some of these may be drugs, alcohol, and smoking, but also electronics. Electronics get you addicted not because of drugs like nicotine but because of something called dopamine(多巴胺).

Dopamine is a chemical naturally produced in the body that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. It is released when you win something. You not only get dopamine from winning sports like football or tennis, but also get a small amount of dopamine when you hear a notification from your device, win something in a video game or even simply surf the web on your smartphone. Your body loves the feel of dopamine and tries to find more ways to get it with less effort, which can lead to addiction to electronics.

We become addicted to various electronics. But among all of them, phones may not do too much harm to us physically. It’s devices, such as televisions and computers that cause you to sit for too long without stretching or moving, which can result in a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (深静脉血栓). It can cause serious damage to our health.

However, we can try to break away from addiction. We can make access to our devices a little more difficult, which can diminish the chances of us actually wanting to go and do that specific thing. For example, if you know you frequently use an app on your smartphone, you can put the app in certain far corner of your phone; therefore, it would take you a little extra time to get to it instead of just turning the phone on and having direct access to it. Besides, we can prevent physical problems by using a standing desk. This is basically a desk, but you have to stand at it instead of sitting on it. This can prevent a wide range of physical problems, including obesity, lower risk of heart disease, and so on.

All in all, electronics probably already have you addicted. Thankfully, there are ways you can get out of this addiction. It’s not a lost cause, and you can still get yourself healthy and out of addiction.

Bitcoin and other so-called cryptocurrencies(加密货币) have been all over the news lately. Apparently, the idea of money that's not tied to a specific bank or a specific country is appealing to many. And more and more people show their interest in these cryptocurrencies.

In the past, money’s makeup varied from place to place. Various objects have served as currency, including beads, ivory, and shells. In West Africa, bracelets (手镯) of bronze or copper considered to have great worth were used as cash, especially if the business was associated with the slave trade there. Throughout the colonial period when tobacco was planted greatly and brought big economic benefits, it was used in place of coins or paper bills in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

Today, on Malaita, an island in the Pacific, a specific type of shell still serves as currency and some people there are even hoarding it, just like Bitcoin, convinced that one day, it will make them wealthy beyond imagination. Mary Bruno, a shop owner from the small town of Auki, on Malaita said, “one of darker shells might get you about two cans of tuna(金枪鱼), but one of red shells might get enough tuna to feed a big family for a long time”. Just like a place that creates coins, there’s only one place on the island where the shells, which are polished and strung together to form 3-foot-long ropes, are made.
