The story of how the song “Happy Birthday to You” came to be, began as a sweet one, that later soured. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and Dr Patty Hill, the headmaster of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, called “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents, as the local expert on spiritual songs, and as the organist(风琴师) for her church, with her sister’s expertise in the area of Kindergarten Education, “Good Morning to All” was sure to be a success.

An increase in students applying to study economics at university is being attributed to (归因于) the global economic crisis awakening a public thirst for knowledge about how the financial system works.

Applications for degree courses beginning this autumn were up by 15% this January, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. A spokesman for the Royal Economic Society said applications to do economics at A level were also up.

Professor John Beath, the president of the society and a leading lecturer at St Andrews University, said his first year lectures — which are open to students from all departments — were drawing crowds of 400, rather than the usual 250.

“There are a large number of students who are not economics majors, who would like to learn something about it. One of the things I have done this year is to relate my teaching to contemporary events in a way that one hash’ t traditionally done” he added.

University applications rose 7% last year, but there were rises above average in several subjects. Nursing saw a 15% jump, with people’s renewed interest in careers in the public sector(部门), which are seen as more secure in economic crisis.

A recent study showed almost two thirds of parents believed schools should do more to teach pupils about financial matters, and almost half said their children had asked them what was going on, although a minority of parents felt they did not understand it themselves well enough to explain.

Zack Hocking, the head of Child Trust Funds, said: “It’s possible that one good thing to arise from the downturn will be a generation that’ s financially wiser and better equipped to manage their money through times of economic uncertainty. ”

72Professor John Beath’ s lectures are________.

A. given in a traditional way B. connected with the present situation

C. open to both students and their parents D. warmly received by economists

73Careers in the public sector are more attractive because of their________.

A. greater stability B. higher pay

C. fewer applications D. better reputation

74In the opinion of most parents________.

A. economics should be the focus of school teaching

B. more students should be admitted to universities

C. the teaching of financial matters should be strengthened

D. children should solve financial problems themselves

75According to Hocking, the global economic crisis might make the youngsters ________.

A. wiser in money management B. have access to better equipment

C. confident about their future careers D. get jobs in Child Trust Funds

五、任务型阅读(10小题;每小题1分,满分10)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填人最恰当的单词。注意:每空格1个单词。

For centuries people dreamed of going into space. This dream began to seem possible when high-flying rockets were built in the early 1900s.

In 1903 a Russian teacher named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky figured out how to use rockets for space travel. His plan was the first one in rocket science to use correct scientific calculation. About 30 years later, a U.S. scientist named Robert Goddard built the first rockets that could reach high altitudes. During World War II, German scientists built large rockets that could travel very far and carry dangerous explosives. After the war, scientists from Germany went to the United States and the Soviet Union to help those countries build space rockets.

These two countries were soon racing to get to space first. Each of these countries wanted to prove that it was stronger and more advanced than the other one. Both countries also had powerful bombs. People in the United States were worried when the Soviets were first to launch a space satellite, which was called Sputnik. The Soviets were also first to send a person into space. Yury Gagarin orbited the earth in the Vostok I spaceship in 1961.

The US government set a goal for its space program to be the first country to put a person on the Moon. The U.S. space program built a series of Apollo spaceship. These vehicles were powered by huge Saturn 5 rockets. In 1969 Apollo II took three men to the moon successfully. Nell Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon.

The Soviets may have lost the race to fly people to the Moon, but they built the first space station in 1971. The United States also built a space station. The space stations allowed people to live and work in space. Then the Soviet Union and the United States cooperated to hook two spaceships together in space. This action ended the "space race". Today a much larger space station, built by several countries together, orbits Earth.

Another new way to go to space is by space shuttle. A space shuttle, first made in the United States in 1981, looks like an airplane. Astronauts who fly spaceships have used shuttles to help put satellites into space.
