41、The Sweetest Melody 最动听的歌

There was once a lonely girl who longed so much for love. One day while she was walking in the woods she found two starving songbirds.

女孩儿把它们带回了家，放在了一个小笼子里。小女孩倾注了很多的爱照料它们，鸟儿一天天地

She took them home and put them in a small cage. She cared them with love and the birds grew strong.

从前，有个孤单的女孩十分期待爱。有一天，在丛林里散步的时候，她发现了两只饿得奄奄一息的小鸟。

Every morning they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds.

好起来。每天清晨，鸟儿们都会用美妙的歌声问候小女孩。女孩情不自禁地爱上这两只鸟儿。

One day the girl left the door to the cage open. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage.

一天，小女孩打开了鸟笼。那只较大的鸟儿便飞了出来。女孩儿十分担心鸟儿会飞走。

The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. As he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him.

当鸟儿飞过来时，小女孩便紧紧地把它抓在手中。捉到鸟儿后，女孩感到非常高兴。

Suddenly she felt the bird go limp. She opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. Her desperate love had killed him.

突然间，她觉得手中的鸟儿渐渐没了气力。她赶紧松开紧握的双手，并惊恐地看着已死去的鸟儿。女孩意识到是自己不顾一切的爱害死了它。

She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage.

刚好在这时，另一只鸟儿在笼子里正用力地扇着翅膀。

She could feel his great need for freedom. He needed to soar into the clear, blue sky.

女孩深切地体会到它对自由的无限向往——它希望在蓝蓝的天空中自由飞翔。

She lifted him from the cage and tossed him softly into the air. The bird circled once, twice, three times.

女孩把鸟儿从笼中拿了出来，并用双手将鸟儿托起，轻轻地抛向空中。鸟儿在空中盘旋着，一圈，两圈，三圈……

The girl watched delightedly at the bird's enjoyment. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss.

女孩看着鸟儿快乐的样子感到高兴极了。她已经没有时间去在意失去的东西，只是祝愿鸟儿能够幸福。

She wanted the bird to be happy. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest melody that she had ever heard.

突然间，鸟儿飞了过来，轻轻地落在她的肩上。鸟儿唱起了女孩所听过的最动听的歌。

寓意：　

真爱难求。如果你费尽心思地想掌控爱，最终你会发现越是想抓牢它，反而越容易失去自我，失去原则，失去彼此间的宽容和谅解，爱也会变得支离破碎。就像当你握紧拳头时，感觉好像抓住了很多，其实，连空气都没有抓到；相反，当你张开怀抱，虽然感觉双手空空，但其实世界都在你的心中。

42、The Blind Man and The Lame Man 瞎子和瘸子

A blind man, being stopped in a bad piece of road, met a Lame Man, and entreated him to help him out of the difficulty into which he had fallen.

一个瞎子在一处糟糕的路段停了下来。他遇见了一个瘸子，于是，恳请瘸子帮助他摆脱困境。

"How can I," replied the Lame Man, "since I can scarcely drag myself along" I am lame, and you look very strong."

“我怎么帮你呢？”瘸子回答道，“我连自己都快要拖不动了。我的腿是瘸的，而你看起来很强壮。”

"I am strong enough," said the other, "I could go if I could but see the way."

'Oh, then we may help each other," said the Lame Man," If you take me on your shoulders, we will seek our fortunes together. I will be eyes for you, and you shall be feet for me."

"With all my heart," said the Blind Man," let us render each other our mutual services."

So he took his lame companion upon his back, and they traveled on with safety and pleasure.

43、The Fox without a Tail 断尾的狐狸

A fox’s tail was caught in a trap. When he was trying to release himself, he lost his whole tail except the stump.

一只狐狸的尾巴被夹住了，当他试着脱身的时候，挣断了整条尾巴。

At first he was ashamed to see the other foxes because he had no tail, but he was determined to face his misfortune. He called all the foxes to a meeting.

When they had gotten together, the fox said that they should all do away with their tails.

时候感到很羞愧。后来，他决定面对这种不幸，就召集了所有的狐狸开会。

He said that their tails were very inconvenient when they met with their enemies.

He did not talk about any advantages of the tail. "You are right," said one of the older foxes, "but I don’t think you would advise us to do away with our tails if you hadn’t lost it yourself first."

可他没有说有尾巴的任何好处。一只老狐狸站出来说：“如果你没有失去你的尾巴，你是不会来劝大家都割去尾巴的。 ”

寓意:

有些人为了自己的利益而劝告他人，我们不能轻信他们的意见。

44、 The Wolf and The Crane 狼与鹭鸶

When a wolf was eating an animal, a small bone from the meat got stuck in his throat. He could not swallow it, so he felt a terrible pain.

狼吃东西的时候，肉里的一小块骨头卡在喉咙里，吞不下去，很疼。

He ran up and down, and tried to find something to relieve the pain.

他四处奔走，想找到什么办法减轻痛苦。

He tried to convince anyone to remove the bone. "I would give anything," he said, "if you would take it out."

他为了让人相信说道：“如果能取出这块骨头，我付出什么都可以。”

At last the crane agreed to try. It told the wolf to open his mouth, and then put its long neck down the wolf’s throat. The crane loosened the bone with its beak, and finally got it out.

最后，鹭鸶同意试试看，他让狼张大嘴，然后将长长的脖子伸进狼的喉咙，用尖嘴叼出骨头。

"Will you kindly give me the reward?" asked the crane. The wolf showed his teeth, and said, "Be content,you have put your head into a wolf’s mouth and taken it out again in safety. That is a great reward for you."

鹭鸶问：“你给我什么报酬？”狼露出他的牙齿，说：“喂，朋友，你能从狼嘴里平安无事地收回头来，这就是报酬。”

寓意:

一个贪得无厌的人是不会因为得到别人的帮助而心存感激的。

45、The Goatherd and the Wild Goats 牧羊人和野山羊

A Goatherd, driving his flock from their pasture at eventide, found some Wild Goats mingled among them, and shut them up together with his own for the night.

黄昏时分，牧羊人赶着他的羊群放牧归来时，发现有几只野山羊也夹杂在其中。他把它们和自己的羊关在一起，过了一夜。

The next day it snowed very haid , so that he could not take the herd to their usual feeding places, but was obliged to keep them in the fold.

第二天，下起了大雪，牧羊人不能带着羊群去它们以往吃草的地方了，只得让它们呆在羊栏里。

He gave his own goats just sufficient food to keep them alive, but fed the strangers more abundantly in the hope of enticing them to stay with him and of making them his own.

他给自己的样的食物刚好能填饱它们的肚子，而喂那几只野山羊的食物要丰盛得多，想以此来引诱它们留下来，归他自己所有。

When the thaw set in, he led them all out to feed, and the Wild Goats scampered away as fast as they could to the mountains.

冰雪刚一融化，那几只野山羊便拼命地向上里跑去。

The Goatherd scolded them for their ingratitude in leaving him, when during the storm he had taken more care of them than of his own herd.

牧羊人责怪它们弃他而去是忘恩负义，说暴风雪期间他对它们的照顾比对自己的羊还要多。

One of them, turning about, said to him;" That is the very reason why we are so cautious; as you treat us better than the Goats you have had so long, it is plain also that if others come after us, you will in the same manner prefer them to ourselves."

一只野山羊听到后，转过头来对他说：“这正是我们小心提防你的原因。既然你对我们比对跟了你那么长时间的羊都好，那么，很显然，如果我们之后又有羊加入的话，你又会同样地去喜欢它们而忽略我们的。”

46、The Crane and the Crab 鹤与螃蟹

One day an old Crane stood in the shallows of a lotus pond with a very dejected look upon his long face. A Crab nearby noticed the troubled look on the old bird, and asked:

一天， 一只老鹤站在荷花池里的浅水处，它那张长长的脸上一副沮丧的射神情。附近的一只蟹注意到老鹤的一脸忧愁，问道：

“There are fish in this pond. How is it that you stand there as if you have given up the thought of ever eating?”

“这个池塘里有鱼。你怎么呆呆地在那儿，好像再也不想吃鱼了。“

“I am sad,” said the old Crane,” because I heard a terrible piece of news today.

“我很伤心，”老鹤说，“今天我听到了一个可怕的消息。

I overheard the fishermen in town saying that tomorrow they will come to this pond and drain it of every fish and every shell to the last periwinkle.

我听城里的渔夫们说，他们明天要来捕光所有的鱼和甲壳类动物，连个螺蛳也不剩，那样我就死定了，因为我没有东西吃了。

When that happens, I am doomed for I shall have nothing to live on. My appetite has left me ever since and I am now resigning myself to dying of hunger.”

The fish in the pond overheard the Crane, and they said to each other in their distress:

池塘里的鱼听到鹤的话，很是忧伤地相互说道：

“Since he and we have a common enemy in the fishmen perhaps the wise Crane can advise us what to do.”

“他和我们的共同敌人是渔夫，或许聪明的鹤能告诉我们该怎么办。”

They swam up to the long-legged bird and said:” Sir Crane, can you tell us how we may save ourselves from this terrible plight?”

他们游到长腿鹤跟前，说道： “鹤先生，你能告诉我们怎样才能逃脱这场可怕的灾难吗？”

“There is only one way,” said the Crane,” you must get to another pool before it is too late.”

“只有一个办法，”鹤说，“你们必须及早到另一个池塘里去。”

“But how can we do that?” asked the fish.

“可是，我们该怎么去呢？ ”鱼问。

“There is a protected pool nearby,” said the Crane, “ and if you wish I will carry you there one by one.”

“附近有一个被保护的池塘，”鹤说。“要是你们愿意，我可以逐个把你们送过去。 ”

The poor fish consulted among themselves and said:” Since there is nothing else we can do to save ourselves, we must make an alliance with our foe.”

可怜的鱼儿彼此商量后，说：“要想活命咱们没有别的办法，只有和敌人结为同盟了。 ”

And they agreed to let the Crane transport them one by one to the pool where they would be safe.

于是，他们同意由鹤把它们逐一送到安全的池塘。

The wicked Crane took the fish, one by one, to a lonely spot nearby, where he devoured them. He returned for more, reporting that all the others were now safe and happy in another pool.

这只阴险邪恶的鹤把鱼一条一条地衔到附近一个偏僻的地方，把它们吃掉了。然后又回来衔更多的鱼，还说那些鱼在另一个池塘里很安全快乐。

Finally all the fish were gone, and the Crab said;” Sir Crane, take me also to that pool, for I wish to be with my friends the fish.”

最后，鱼都给衔走了，蟹说：“鹤先生，也把我带到那个池塘里去吧，我想和我的鱼朋友们在一起。 ”

The greedy Crane, who loved Crab meat, carefully lifted the ten-legged creature and carried him off to the spot where he had devoured all the fish.

这只贪婪的哦鹤很喜欢蟹肉，他小心地衔着这个十条腿的动物，把蟹带到他吃鱼的地方去。

But when the Crab saw all the bones on the ground and realized how cunning the Crane had been, he thought to himself;”

蟹看到地上的骨头，立刻明白了鹤是多么的狡猾，他心想：

I am undone! Yet when the wise are attacked, even if they see no hope of saving themselves, they still do not give up, but die fighting.”

“我完了，但是智者被攻击时，即使没有生存的希望，也绝不会放弃，宁愿战斗而死。”

Whereupon the Crab fastened his pincer-like fore claws upon the Crane’s throat and tore at it until the Crane perished.

想到此，蟹用他钳子般的前蟹扼紧鹤的喉咙，不停地撕咬，直到鹤咽气为止。

47、Daughter and Daughter-in-law 女儿和媳妇

Two women were chatting in a room,

两个妇人在聊天，

One asked, "How is everthing going with your son?"

其中一个问道「你儿子还好吧?」

"Oh,don't even mention it! What a huge misfortune!!" The woman sighed :

「别提了，真是不幸哦!!」这个妇人叹息道：

"He is poor enough, and married an extraordinary lazy daughter-in-law. She doesn’t cook, not clean the room, not look after the children except to sleep all the time. It was my son who brings breakfast to her bed.

「他实在够可怜，娶个媳妇懒的要命，不烧饭、不扫地、不洗衣服、不带孩子，整天就是睡觉，我儿子还要端早餐到她的床上呢!!」

"How about your dauther?"

「你那女儿呢?」

"She might be lucky." the woman smiled.

「那她可就好命了。」妇人满脸笑容

"She married a good husband who doesn’t allow her to do the housework, and handles everything all alone. The housework includes cooking, washing, cleaning and looking after the children. What’s more, he brings breakfast to my daughter every day."

「他嫁了一个不错的丈夫，不让他做家事，全部都由先生一手包办，煮饭、洗衣、扫地、带孩子，而且每天早上还端早点到床上给她吃呢!」

48、The Greatest Gift of All 最贵重的礼物

At one stopover in a town, a huge banner was written in bold letters: FAMINE IN AFR/CA~ PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO SAVE THE STARVING PEOPLE.

在一个镇上的中转站挂着一个巨型横幅，上面用黑体字写着： ¨非洲饥荒，请您慷慨解囊，拯救饥饿的人们。¨在那儿有一大群 人在排队捐赠。

A large crowd was queuing to hand over their donations.Near the door of the town hall stood a beautiful young girl, poorly but neatly dressed.

市政厅的门旁站着一个漂亮的小姑娘，她的衣服质地很差， 却很整洁。她注视着眼前的人们，眼里闪烁着害羞的神情。

With shy glances she watched the people before her. She saw a merchant who laid a bag of 90ld on the table.

Then came a rich lady with haughty looks who offered a variety of jewels; some others handed cash, clothing's and foodstuff, The girl was reluctant to take her turn but at last, summoning up her courage, she stepped forward.

Once upon a time, there was a mouse father. He wanted to marry his daughter to the greatest person in the world.

But, who was the greatest person in the world? Oh! The sun! He must be the greatest person in the world. The mouse father went to talk to the sun.

“Hello! Mr. Sun. I know you are the greatest person in the world. Would you marry my daughter?”

“Hello! Mr. Cloud. I know you are the greatest person in the world. Would you marry my daughter?”

“What? I’m not the greatest person in the world. The greatest person is the wind. If he comes out, I’ll be blown away2.”

“什么？我才不是世界上最伟大的人呢！最伟大的人应该是风。只要他一刮起来，我就被吹的远远的。”

The mouse father went to talk to the wind.

老鼠爸爸又去找风谈。

“Hello! Mr. Wind. I know you are the greatest person in the world. Would you marry my daughter?”

“哈喽！风先生，我知道你是世界上最伟大的人。您愿意娶我的女儿吗？”

“What? I’m not the greatest person in the world. The greatest person is the wall. If he comes out, I’ll be stopped.”

“什么？我可不是世界上最伟大的人。最伟大的人应该是墙。只要有他在，我就被挡住了。”

The mouse father went to talk to the wall.

老鼠爸爸又去找墙谈。

“Hello! Mr. Wall. I know you are the greatest person in the world. Would you marry my daughter?”

“哈喽！墙先生，我知道你是世界上最伟大的人。你愿意娶我的女儿吗？”

“What? I’m not the greatest person in the world. The greatest person is YOU, the mouse.”

“什么？我才不是世界上最伟大的人呢！最伟大的其实是你们老鼠！”

“The greatest person in the world is … mouse?”

“Yes, the greatest person in the world is mouse. See?3 If mouse comes out, I’ll be bit!”

The mouse father was very happy. He finally knew mouse was the greatest person in the world. He would marry his daughter to the handsome mouse next door.

50、A bundle of sticks 一捆树枝

a man once had four sons who never stopped quarrelling with one another.

从前有一个人，他有四个儿子，但儿子们不断地争吵。

he was always telling them how much easier life would be if they worked together but they took absolutely no notice of him.

他一再告诫他们说，如果他们一起干活儿，生活会舒适得多，但他们丝毫不理会他的意见。

one day he decided to show them what he meant.

有一天，他决定通过示范把自己的意思告诉他们。

he called all the sons together and put a tightly tied bundle of sticks on the floor in front of them.

他把四个儿子都叫来，又把一捆扎得很紧的树枝放在他们面前。

"can you break that?" he asked the youngest son. the boy put his knee on the bundle but though he pressed and pulled with his arms he could not bend the wood. 

“你能折断这个吗？h他问最小的儿子。小儿子用膝盖顶住，两只手又压又拉，都不能把那捆树枝弄弯。

the father asked each son in turn to try to break the bundle, but none of them could do it .

父亲让另外三个儿子挨个儿试了试，但他们谁也做不到。

then he untied the string and scattered the sticks.

然后，他解开绳子，把树枝撒开。

"now try,"he said. the boys broke the sticks easily in their hands.

¨现在试试吧。¨他说。四个小伙子用手轻轻一撅，树枝就断了。

"do you see what i mean?" asked the father. "if only you stand together no one can hurt you .

¨你们明白我的意思了吗？”父亲问，¨只要你们联合起来，谁也不能伤害你们。

if you all disagree the whole time and insist on going your separate ways, the first enemy you meet will be able to destroy you.'

如果你们老吵架，坚持各行其是，那么你们一遇到敌人，就会被打败。
