A group of swans flew down to a beach where a crow (乌鸦) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain (笔试).

“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”

One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge (挑战). The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.

Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments (评价) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle to keep himself from falling into the water.

The swan pretended (假装) not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water, brother? Is that another trick? “

“No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of my pride (自大) ! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life...”

Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘录) from his speech.

I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.

But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.

That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投篮) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.

No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.

And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged (泄气), and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

46. Why does Barack Obama mention (提到) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph?

A. To compare these two famous persons.

B. To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.

C. To show that the two persons were treated unfairly.

D. To prove that failure is the mother of success.

47. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. No one can be successful without working hard.

B. Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.

C. Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.

D. One should try his best to make his dream come true.

48. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?

A. One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him.

B. One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is faced with.

C. One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.

D. One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him.

(C)

Television talk shows have been popular since arrival of the medium, like many shows coming from the ones on radio. For example, the start of talk shows’ golden age can be considered in 1948, although the television was not common in American homes until the 1950s. From 1949 to 1973, nearly half of all daytime programs on the three networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) was talk.

As we know that video did not kill the talk show hosts, the radio stars—it made him / her an even bigger star. Hosts during the golden age included Arthur Godfrey (Arthur Godfrey and his friends), Dave Garroway (The Today Show), and Jack Par (The Tonight Show). All were necessary parts in the formation of the talk show formats (编排) we know and love today.

A talk show can cost less than$100,000 per episode (连续剧中的一集) to produce while many of today’s dramas cost more than$million an episode. So, if successful, it can make bountiful money.

Still, it takes a lot of work. Since 1948, hundreds of talk shows have come and gone, with only a few having true staying long. Conan O’Brien, for example, tried to stay long only because the network did not know what else to put in its place.

There are several types of talk shows, from the foreign and strange programs like Comedy Central’s The Graham Norton Effect to the more traditional Late Show with David Letterman. But while the styles might be different, the format is limited (受限制).

What we are mos used to is the informal (非正式的) guest-host format, in which the show’s host welcomes famous people or other talk-worthy people, and this is considered as an informal discussion. The scene is is very comedic (戏剧性) or musical or both.

The second most common format is the public affairs (公共事务) show, in which a host or hosts interviews people in the news or experts in a given field. Shows that follow this format include booth the morning news programs (Good morning America Or Meet the Press) and “issue” talk shows (The Oprah Winfrey Show or The Jerry Springer Show).

Everything else is mainly a mixture of these two formats.

49.________ are the famous hosts during the golden age.

A. Arthur Godfrey

B. Arthur Godfrey and his Friends

C. Dave Garroway and Jack Par

D. Arthur Godfrey, Dave Garroway and Jack Par

50.What does the underlined word “bountiful” mean in Chinese in Paragraph 3?

A. 少许 B. 大量 C. 漂亮的 D. 看不见的

51.Why can’t many talk shows stay for a long time?

A. Because it costs much to produce per episode.

B. Because they can’t make money from their programs.

C. Because they have nothing new to put in their programs.

D. The passage does not tell the readers about it.

52.In which kind of talk shows, do the hosts always interview people in the news?

A. The guest-host format shows. B. The public affairs shows.

C. Both A and B. D. Neither A nor B.

D

Although she’s quite young, Drew Barrymore can be a Hollywood legend (传奇). She was born on February 22, 1975, in California. Being from a family that produced great actors, she quickly found her way into the spotlight (聚光灯).

Fishing is my favourite sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. After I spend whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. “You’d better stop fishing.” My friends say, “It’s a waste of time.” but they don’t realize one important thing. I’m not really interested in fishing. I’m only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all.
