Hi Susie,

I've learned something about Gran and Grandad, and how they ended up living in Canada. I told you that Grandad worked as a chef (厨师) on ships from 1937 until 1939, when WWII started. And you know that while he was working on one of the ships, he met Gran. She was the ship's nurse.

That ship's destination was Vancouver. When the ship arrived, they spent a couple of days there. That's when Grandad asked Gran to marry him, and she said yes. During their stay in Vancouver, they decided that they really liked the city and that they would start a new life in Canada.

However, WWII started and Grandad had to go back to England and join the British Army. At the same time, Gran stayed in Canada, because it was much safer. They were separated for five years and missed each other very much. Gran was quite lonely at first, but after a couple of months she got a job in a hospital and she made friends there — she was always very friendly and good at talking to people.

In 1946, Grandad returned to Canada and they got married. Five years later, my father was born. And then two years after that, your mother was born.

Gran and Grandad lived in the same house for 30 years. I used to go and visit them in Vancouver over the summer when I was at school. Would you like me to take you to see the house one day?

Many experts have recently got together to find out what makes us happy and have come to surprising results.

One of the main topics is how to measure (测量) happiness. Some experts say that there are many ways to measure happiness, like recording a person's feelings, satisfaction in life. But others say that you can't really measure happiness but you can see it.

Money is really important in many people's life. Once people have enough money to support their living, they pay more attention to other important things. In many cases, friends and a close family are more important. Most people also need meaningful and creative work to find happiness.

Studies find that there is a connection between happiness and health. Most of the time, people who are happier have better health. They are not as stressed as others. Besides, happier people may be able to live longer and enjoy their happiness. Studies also show that those who laugh a lot and have a good sense of humour are also happier.

Is there a way of learning happiness or improving it? Some experts say that if people express their thanks, they can become happier. Joining pleasant conversations can also bring more satisfaction and happiness. Not surprisingly, men feel that a good

relationship is important in being happy. Happiness is also contagious. The results show that if you have a member of your family or a friend near you who is happy, you will be happy, too.

How important is colour in the business world?

Google, one of the biggest US companies, is trying to find it out. The company has already found “a close connection between colour and satisfaction with a person’s work area”. That’s according to its spokeswoman named Meghan Casserly.

“Colour is a silent salesperson,” said Elyria Kemp. She is an assistant professor of marketing at the University of New Orleans.

Kemp is following colour trends (趋势) in business. She is studying the connection between feelings and colour. According to Kemp, when people make an evaluation (评估) of a product, usually they do this within 90 seconds or less. Besides, more than half of their first evaluation is based on colour alone.

That’s why so many companies are researching their colour choices. They are spending thousands of dollars on the research, too. Just think of UPS’s Pullman brown, Home Depot’s orange and Tiffany & Co.’s blue.

Joclyn Benedetto is a spokeswoman for Tiffany & Co. She said the success of the company’s jewellery (珠宝) was connected to its blue colour. It is used to wrap (包装) every product. She said the colour was chosen by the founder Charles Lewis Tiffany for the cover of Blue Book, Tiffany’s annual collection of beautifully hand-made jewels, which first came out in 1845.

Coca-Cola’s red colour also dates back more than 100 years. The soft drink was shipped in barrels painted red.

A spokesperson for Home Depot said research showed that the first thing people thought of was orange when they heard the name of the company. Smaller companies are also realizing the importance of colour. But picking the right colour is important.

“You know when something is right because you get a feeling of safety, and it’s not something that you think about. It just will hit you,” said Emil Hagopian, a distributor for Mar Plast Colour Building Accessories in Ann Arbour, Mich. “And sometimes, if

it’s done wrong, that also hits you.”

( ) 16. What is Google trying to find out?

A. How to create a better work area.

B. How to become the biggest US company.

C. The secret of success in the business world.

C. based on its shape D. based on their feelings

( ) 19. What do we know about Tiffany & Co. according to the passage?

Many people like to choose the colours of their rooms on their own because they think room colours can show their personality. However, room colours can do much

more than that. They can also affect our moods and thoughts. Since colours affect people in many ways depending on age, sex, climate and ethnic (种族的) background, it’s important to choose colours cleverly when it comes to decoration. If people learn some basic information about colours and their effects (影响), it won’t be difficult for them to choose the right colours.

Before deciding on paint colour, people should think about what mood they want to create and which colours can help them achieve that mood. If they don’t know the answers, they can turn to magazines, decorating books and websites for help. It is suggested that people should limit the number of colours in a room to no more than three or four. Too many colours can make a room look messy (脏乱的). Now lets take a closer look at colours and learn what they can do to a room.

Red can raise a room’s energy level. It can draw people together and encourage talk in the living room or dining room. However, it is usually considered too exciting for bedrooms.

Yellow catches the joy of sunshine and stands for happiness. It’s an excellent choice for kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms, but studies show that people are

more likely to lose their temper (脾气) and that babies seem to cry more in large yellow rooms.

Green is thought to be the most restful colour for the eyes. Having a calming effect and helping people to relax, the colour is suitable for almost any room in the house.

Orange can also bring a feeling of excitement. While it’s not a good idea to choose orange for a living room or a bedroom, this colour is great for an exercise room.

Hello, everyone,

We live in a world full of colours. Usually there are two kinds of colours, warm colours and cool colours. Colours can influence our moods. For example, if we feel sad, wearing orange can cheer us up. We all know that red represents power and strong feelings. It always gives us a lot of help when we have difficulty making a decision. It’s important to know the match of colours. For example, red and white are a good match, because the powerful red balances the calm white.

My favourite colour is blue because it makes me feel calm. What’s more, it is good for our mind and body. So the walls of my bedroom are painted blue.

That’s all. Thanks for your listening.
