The tragedy of the hero in Greek mythology

When we refer to tragedy, there are various definitions explaining tragedy, as for me, I give a definition of tragedy in this way: fate destroys the good thing, and show it in front of us, we all know what will happen, but we can do nothing to prevent it. What we can do is only seeing it happens as fate tells.

In the tragedy, we can see that, when suffering imposed on heroes, they reinvent themselves by their character in the tragedy, and then complete a miserable journey of life with their own tragic character. Tragedy show the hero’s suffering and destruction to us, we are thinking in tragedy. We feel the life is full of will and can't be destroyed by thinking through the destruction of the individual, and struggling blindly negative force can turn into a perennial create power.

The legend of heroes in Greek mythology originated from the worship of ancestors, it is a kind of art reviews that ancient Greeks struggled against the ancient history and the nature. Such a legendary hero is mostly descendants of gods and men, the hero of demigod. They have physical strength, courage, and the heroic spirit and perseverance, embodying that human can conquer the nature, as the embodiment of the ancient people's collective strength and wisdom. One of the most famous legends is Hercules and his 12 big achievements. Besides Jason, who takes the Golden Fleece, etc. In Greek mythology, gods and men are isomorphous, gods have men’s physical beauty, and men’s emotions and desires. They know the joys and sorrows, and participate men’s activities. The difference between god and man only lies in that, the former has eternal life, no death; the latter’s life is limited, with sickness and death.

The hero in the Greek mythology is always in tribulation, but they never give up and show an unstoppable giant style and absolute spirit of struggle. These embody people make unremitting struggle with nature, resist the oppression of fate, reflecting a realm that beyond the man, and man try their best to reach the realm of god. And this dooms the hero in the Greek mythology to a tragic ending, a tragedy seems to have always been in Greek mythology.

I think the most tragic hero in Greek mythology is Oedipus.

I see Oedipus as a person with superb wisdom and strong faith, if it weren't a trick of fate, Oedipus would be a perfect king, a darling of the god. When we are in appreciation of Oedipus comedy, we can see that, Oedipus impresses us as a noble, elegant person, who reveals majestic demeanor forever. But the tragedy is that, it destroys a hero who we considered to be "good", let us see a tragedy that closes to the "perfect" : when Oedipus had no time to choose, he was abandoned by their parents; In order to avoid the fate of the tragedy, he kept away from the adoptive parents who were thought to be his parents, but he killed his parents; He used his wisdom to beat god, but he lost to the goddess of fate: He married his own mother; He tried to find out the truth for national security, but accepted the result miserable; He was abandoned by his own son, stray outside; At the time of death, he was going to the suffering in the hell!

Oedipus finally ended his miserable life. The weight of the tragedy in Oedipus is so heavy. But he never gave up, In the fight with the domestic disaster he was still not yield to fate, and lead his country's people's resistance. Even he was abandoned by his own children out of the palace, he still chose unyielding struggle. We can assume that, if Oedipus without the tragic fate, what would he be? What kind of power he acquired in his suffering: the mind is under any one or god cannot transcend, his strength and determination, make him become a giant, a giant no one could overcome! This is a person who truly achieves the realm of god.

I think the most not worth sympathy tragedy is the story of Jason. Because he fell in love with another princess, and betrayed his wife, Medea, who helped him retrieved the Golden Fleece and bore him two children. It enraged Medea, and Medea’s revenge made him lose all what he have. At last, he met a sad and ironic end. It’s his desire that result in his tragedy.

Comedy can only give a person a short relief, but only tragedy can let a person think of his own life when he is in the reflection of the tragedy. People sharpen in tragedy, acquire bear ability of the heart and endless power to overcome nature and win the perfect life.
