/retype/zoom/2c143af127284b73f24250cc?pn=2Yellow Womanexplores one woman’s desires and changes--her need to open herself to a richer sensuality.Walking away from her everyday identity as daughter, wife and mother, she takes possession of transgressive feelings and desires by recognizing them in the stories she has heard,by blurring the boundaries between herself and the Yellow Woman of myth.Silko’s decision to tell the story from the narrator’s point of view is traditional, but her use of first person narration and the story’s much raised ambiguity brilliantly reinforce her themes.Like traditional yellow women, the narrator is unnamed.By choosing not to reveal her name, she claims the role of Yellow Woman, and Yellow Woman’s story is the one Silko clearly claims as her own.The essays in this collection compare Silko’s many retellings of Yellow Woman stories from a variety of angles, looking at crucial themes like storytelling, cultural inheritances, memory, continuity, identity, interconnectedness, ritual, and tradition. This casebook includes an introduction by the editor,a chronology,an authoritative text of the story itself, critical essays, and a bibliography for further reading in both primary and secondary sources.Contributors include Kim Barnes,A.LaVonne Ruoff,Paula Gunn Allen,Patricia Clark Smith,Bernard A.Hirsch,Arnold Krupat,Linda Danielson, and Patricia Jones.

Chapter One: Synopsis of the author

W.Somerset Maugham is a Popular British novelist,playwrigh(来自:WwW.fwwang.cn :英美短篇小说教学总结)t,short-story writer and the

highest-paid author. He was born on 25th January 1874 in Paris, the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy.Maugham learned French as his native tongue. At the age of 10,Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the Reverend Hey MacDonald Maugham.Educated at King’s School,Canterbury, where he developed a stammer that he never outgrew, and Heidelberg University,Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St.Thomas’ medical school, but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays.Maugham lived in Paris for ten years as a struggling young author. In 1897 appeared his first novel,LIZA OF LAMBETH,which drew on his experiences of attending women in childbirth.Maugham

named his daughter and only child,Elizabeth ‘Liza’ Mary Maugham, after the title character. His first play,

A MAN OF HONOUR,was produced in 1903.Four of his dramas ran simultaneously in London in 1904.Maugham’s breakthrough novel was the semi-autobiographical OF HUMAN BONDAGE (1915),which is usually considered his outstanding achievement. The story follows the childhood, youth, and early manhood of Philip Carey, who is born with a clubfoot.Philip never knew his father and his mother only for a brief space. He is raised by a religious aunt and uncle, but the real process of his education, after the end of an unsatisfactory social life, begins in Heidelberg.Philip goes to Paris to study art,and at the age of thirty he qualifies as a doctor. Finally he marries Sally Athelny,a normal, healthy, happy girl.During World War I he worked as a secret agent and in 1928 settled in Cap Ferret in France, from where he made

journeys all over the world. He wrote many novels as Cakes and Ale,The Razors Edge and The Verger. In many of Maugham’s novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in a clear, economical style with a cynical or resigned undertone. He died on 15th December 1965.

Chapter Two: Summary of the verger

The new vicar of St.Peter’s Church is astonished to learn that the long-serving verger,Albert

Foreman,is illiterate. When Foreman refuses to learn to read, the vicar feels he has no choice but to fire him.

On the way back to his lodgings,Foreman notices that there is not a tobacconist shop in the area.Needing work,he decides to open one.He considered the matter from every point of view and next day he went along the street and by good luck found a little shop to let that looked as though it would exactly suit him.Their fledgling business is very successful, and Foreman soon sets up another shop.Over the next decade,Foreman starts up more and more shops, becoming a wealthy man in the process and depositing his profits at the bank.

The bank manager recommends that he invest his sizable savings in order to get a better return on his money, forcing Foreman to reveal that he has not been able to because he cannot read. When the stunned manager asked if he knew where he would be if he could,Foreman replies that he would be the verger of St.Peter’s.

Chapter Three: Background information

The story happened in 19th century. At that time the society of England was having intense reform. The clash between newly rising bourgeoisie and conservative church influence was so acute. The author was discontented with the system of education and church, and portrayed a man who can not read and write. In the story,Albert from the bottom of the society,he represented the newly rising bourgeoisie. He lost his job in the church but became a successful businessman at last. From the text we can clearly see that the authors affirmation of the new bourgeoisie in 19th century. But at the same time,we should also be aware of that Maugham was limited by the age he lived,he did not see the defects and limitations of the British new bourgeoisie.

Chapter Four: The figure model and Implied meaning

I want to give my opinion about how the author modeled the leading character Albert. At the

beginning of the story,Albert was a hard-working verger. He kept his new one,its folds as full and stiff as though it were made not of alpaca but of perennial bronze, for funerals and weddings. From his actions we could feel he did everything by his heart,he ardently loved his job.

When the new vicar discovered Albert can not read or write,he wanted to drive away the old verger,Albert knew his value, and now he straightened himself a little. At last,he handed over the resignation. He did not surrender the person who he never liked. He treated the work fairly. He had a clear

conscience.I understand.I shall be apply to and in my resignation as soon as youve found somebody to take my place. The words show Albert was so quiet.

Pay attention to the actions: put on his coat, hat in hand walked out of the church, locked the church door, strolled across the square, walked slowly along……His heart was heavy. We could feel the sadness.

A chance coming,he found that it was a long street, with all sorts of shops in it,but there was not a single one where you could buy cigarettes. So he opened a cigarette shop and earned much money. The bank manager suggested him to invest stock, and only needed his sign. But Albert said: I can not write,if I can,I could be verger of St.Peters,Neville Square. From the last sentence which Albert said, the author mocked the church influence.

This story was used to demonstrate that Our Lord has given each and every one of us the ability to achieve our lifes goal. All we need is faith in Him and ourselves.Everyone should be a kind person who works hard and has an optimistic heart.Misfortune may be an actual blessingMisfortune might be a blessing in disguiseA loss may turn out to be a gain. So,we should actively to live, enjoy our life, enjoy ourselves. We should believe that Stupid is as stupid does,God take something from your side, will certainly bring you some other things.Because,God is fair.
