MAY 14 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel. Many Israelis, however, are not in the mood to celebrate.

Different from all its neighbors in religion, Israel is also far more successful economically than its neighbors. It gets a great amount of support from America and other Western countries. The country is now a world leader in many industries, such as IT and modern agriculture.

However, conflict exists, just like 60 years ago. And the signal of peace is as weak as ever. Palestinian militants (武装人员) have fired more than 7 000 missiles from Gaza, mainly at Sedro, killing 13 people. In the same period hundreds of Palestinian civilians in Gaza have died in Israeli military action.

In order to create peace, the world community hopes both sides accept and follow the Middle East peace plan. Optimists believe through Israeli-Palestinian negotiations there will finally be peace.

Both Israelis and Palestinians want to live in peace without explosions that remind them that they are living in a special but dangerous place.

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But, as we can’t drink sea water, how can it be important?

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produces over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important sea water is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. The old saying “The early bird catches the worm” show us the importance of planning, working hard and trying constant. To achieve outstanding results, the most people must plan ahead and work diligently to overcome all kind of difficulties.

That has been my own experience, either. When I first started at high school, I seldom passed my exams, so I never prepared well. Later, my teacher, Mr. Black, advised me plan everything in advance. She asked me to study hard as well. After a year of putting his advice onto practice, I can now easily pass all my exams.
