Preface
Inthepastyears,researchinmolecularbiologyandmolecularmedicinehasaccumulatedenormousamountsofdata.ThisincludesgenomicsequencesgatheredbytheHumanGenomeProject,geneexpressiondatafrommicroarrayexperiments,proteinidentificationandquantificationdatafromproteomicsexperiments,andSNPdatafromhigh-throughputSNParrays.However,ourunderstandingofthebiologicalprocessesunderlyingthesedatalagsfarbehind.Thereisastronginterestinemployingmethodsofknowledgediscoveryanddataminingtogeneratemodelsofbiologicalsystems.Miningbiologicaldatabasesimposeschallengeswhichknowledgediscoveryanddatamininghavetoaddress,andwhichformthefocusoftheEuropeanWorkshoponDataMiningandTextMiningforBioinformatics.ThisvolumecontainsthepaperspresentedattheEuropeanWorkshoponDataMiningandTextMiningforBioinformatics,heldattheEuropeanConferenceonMachineLearningandtheEuropeanConferenceonPrinciplesandPracticeofKnowledgeDiscoveryinDatabases,inDubrovnik,Croatia,onSeptember22,2003.Threeinvitedandtencontributedpaperswerepresentedattheworkshop;invitedpresentationsweregivenby
