I strongly believe that we can have an important effect on anyone we meet. The right words at just the right time could totally change someone’s life.
Years ago, that’s what happened to me. My life was completely changed because a simple three-word phrase was delivered at the right time in just the right way.
When I was 3 years old, my parents discovered I was totally deaf. After asking many educational specialists, doctors, psychologists, and parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me in a “mainstream” school. All of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing.
From the time I started going there in the third grade, I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School in the small, quiet town of Latham, New York. From almost the first day there, the other kids made fun of me and called me names mainly because of my hearing aid and the way I talked.
I worried throughout elementary school because, in addition to the problems of “fitting in” with the other students, I also struggled with most of my schoolwork.
Although I seemed outgoing, my self-esteem was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a weird-looking box around his neck who wasn’t even smart enough to keep up with the other kids.
Mrs Jordan, my fifth-grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase. Mrs Jordan was a large woman with a voice that bounced (反弹) off the walls of her tiny classroom.
One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips and immediately raised my hand. For once I knew the answer. But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath and nervously answered Mrs Jordan’s question.
I will never forget what happened next.
Mrs Jordan pointed directly at me. With sparkling eyes and a wide smile she cried: “THAT’S RIGHT, STEPHEN!”
For the first time in my young life, I was an instant star. My confidence soared like never before.
I decided right then and there that I would make a place for myself in this world. No matter how many obstacles I might meet in life, I knew I could overcome them. A simple three-word phrase delivered with incredible enthusiasm (热情) had totally changed my young life. “THAT’S RIGHT, STEPHEN!”
30. A “mainstream” school is probably where ______.
A. students with disabilities go to study B. students can receive extra care
C. most students do not have disabilities D. there are many wonderful teachers
31. What was the author’s school life like?
A. He got along very well with his classmates. B. He could deal with his homework easily.
C. He kept up with others by working hard. D. He felt ashamed of his performance in school.
32. When Mrs Jordan called on the author, ______.
A. he was so nervous that he forgot the answer
B. he didn’t expect to receive such encouraging praise
C. he was afraid that his classmates might laugh at him
D. he knew he would become an instant star afterwards
33. With his story, the author mainly wants to tell us that ______.
A. teachers should help their students build their confidence
B. the right words at the right time could make a difference
C. being disabled doesn’t mean being less important than others
D. you need to prove yourself when you are given the chance

C

Playing computer games is getting serious.

Washington teacher Tammie Schrader is so crazy about computer games in education that she thinks they can be used to teach programming skills which will help students in college – starting in middle school.
Canadian teacher Justin Holladay wrote a few simple games to help his students practice math skills, and when they caught on, he started his own company to create more of them.
And the University of Washington’s Zoran Popovic got more than 4,000 Washington students to master linear equations (线性方程) this spring by playing a computer game for just a few hours.
The growing availability of inexpensive tablet computers and a new generation of young teachers who grew up playing on computers have got interested in games for serious purposes.
“Six or seven years ago, selling games to schools was brutal,” said David Martz of Muzzy Lane Software, a Boston, US company that produces games for publishers such as McGraw-Hill. Now, he said, schools are interested in the promise of games – perhaps because gaming is so much more mainstream .
Software and education companies have tried for many years to combine youngsters’ passion for computer games with educational progress, without much success.
Popovic thinks the first efforts to combine games with education fell flat because they were created by commercial companies. These companies were more interested in selling products than seeing students master a skill.
Teachers say there are some pretty good games on the market now.
Holladay, the math teacher from Alberta, Canada, began moving paper-based math games to the iPad, building games that allowed students to compete with each other and giving him instant feedback on their progress.
The games improved the lessons he was teaching, and his students had fun playing, he said. “They were a lot more engaged.”

34. What can we conclude from the first four paragraphs?
A. Many US teachers devote themselves to creating computer games for students.

36. The underlined phrase “fell flat” in Paragraph 8 probably means ______.

A 12-year-old girl from Virginia, US learned this lesson the hard way. She faced charges for using gun, bomb and knife emojis in a post on Instagram, a photo-sharing website, in December. She had to appear in a court for threatening the school and computer harassment (骚扰) last month, reported The Washington Post.
The girl’s mother said her daughter was a good kid and that the post was a response to bullying (欺凌). It’s not clear whether the case has already been solved, since the hearings (听证) were not open to the public.
There will be more and more of these cases as emojis continue to spread around the world. Last year, 6 billion emojis and other similar pictures were sent every day, according to the UK-based mobile technology company SwiftKey.

Hello, teachers and schoolmates. Its my honor to be here and talk about my views about how to keep safe at school.

Its necessary to obey the rules in P.E class or in the swimming pool. We shouldnt carry anything dangerous with us, like knives. After class, wed better try our best to guard against any possible danger. Please dont play dangerous games or chase each other. Its impolite to bully classmates who are short or small. Sometimes we may also feel stressed. Listening to music and doing some sports will make it easier for us to relax ourselves.

When we are in trouble, we can always ask our teachers for help. I am sure they are willing to offer advice. Besides, posters can be put up to help students know more about how to keep safe at school. If everyone can pay more attention to safety, we are sure to have a safe and wonderful school life.
