A new study warns that about 30% of the world’s population may not have enough water by the year 2025.

A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says that more than 335,000,000 people in 28 countries lack enough water now. Most of the countries are in African or the Middle East.

PAI researcher Robert Engelman says that by the year 2025, about 3,000,000,000 people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe(严峻的) water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on earth stays the same.

Mr. Engelman says the population in the countries that lack water is growing faster than other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue.

The report says that lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may bring about health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of the diseases spread by water. Lack of water may also result in more international conflicts(冲突). Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get 60% of their fresh water from other countries. It also says that lack of water would affect their economic development. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to use water for more than purpose. Another way is to teach people not to waster water. A third way is to use less water in agriculture(农业). The report also says that long-term solutions(解决方案) to the water problem must include controls on population growth.

In 1969, as US astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, he famously declared, That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. And as many countries come together to celebrate World Space Week from Oct 4-10, it seems that there are still many leaps to take.

During ancient times, our only steps were back and forth across the surface of our own planet. We climbed to the top of mountains, or sailed in boats across oceans. But we didn’t, and couldn’t, leave the surface of our planet.

It’s not surprising that back then, the so-called heavens fascinated(使着迷) us so much. How could they not? How could people not be obsessed with the great object in the sky that arrived each day with light and then left, taking the light with it? Or the mysterious moon, stars and planets that lit up the night sky? Compared with us, these things seemed so free and exciting.

Different cultures created stories about the heavens. The Chinese referred to a ‘King of the Sky’ who created the heavens and decorated them with stars; the ancient Greeks had ‘the Sky Gods’ who controlled the weather.

Few of us believe those stories anymore – science has taught us better. And yet the heavens, or what we now call ‘space’ and ‘outer space’, are still a source of mystery and fascination for us. Yes, there are space stations, satellites and trips to other planets. None of this modern science, however, has made space any less fascinating to us.

As the American scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson said, ‘The universe is under no obligation (义务) to make sense to you.’ The more we know, the more our curiosity grows.

Even today, the most popular novels and movies are set on other planets, solar systems (太阳系) or galaxies (星系). Space is still mysterious, as it was for the ancient Chinese, Greeks and Romans. And perhaps it always will be.

32. The author used Neil Armstrong’s story to ______.

A. describe how the celebration of World Space Week began

B. draw attention to great achievements in space exploration
C. explain why human beings are curious about outer space
D. predict(预报) future space programs that might change history

33. The underline word ‘obsessed’ in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. happy B. interested C. satisfied D. bored

34. Compared with modern people, ancient Greeks ______.

A. didn’t leave many records of space objects
B. believed the King of the Sky controlled the weather
C. shared a similar curiosity about the universe
D. showed little respect for the power of nature

35. What’s the article mainly about?
A. Important events in space exploration history.
B. Human’s unchangeable interest in space.
C. Ancient stories inspired(激发,产生) by the heavens.
D. What we have learned about the universe.

卷(非选择题 共42分)

四、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)

阅读下面短文,在表格内的空白处填入合适的答案(每格限填一词)。

Since the beginning of human evolution(演变,进化), men have migrated(迁移) across continents() in search of food, shelter, safety, and comfortable weather. People still move for these reasons, but new reasons for human migration are arising, such as job relocation(重新安置) and overpopulation.

Three million migrants(移民) are moving from poor countries to wealthier ones each year, and increasingly, their destination(目的地) is a neighboring country in developing parts of the world. People are moving within the developing world for the same reasons as they migrate to wealthier nations. People from poor countries are going to less poor countries, getting away from wars and conflicts. They are also leading to population pressures because some countries are now crowded with people, and they often have high population growth. Those people need to go somewhere else.

There are three main reasons why people move. The basic kinds and percentages are as follows, according to the Current Population Surveys (CPS):

Family-related reasons account for 26.3%, including changes in marriage and other family reasons; work-related reasons 16.2%, including job transfer, retirement, and other job-related reasons; housing-related reasons 51.6%, including new and better houses, better neighborhood, cheaper housing and other housing reasons; the remaining 5.9% of other reasons are attending college, the change of climate and health reasons.

Americans have been migrating south and west for many years in search of better job opportunities and warmer climates. They have also been moving to places a little far from cities, in search of bigger yards and houses, lower crime rates and better schools. In 1950, nearly a fifth of the population lived in the nation’s 20 largest cities. In 2006, it was about one in ten. That’s why many American people say, ‘Big Cities Shrink as People Move South, West.’ They like to live in the countryside.

Between March 2005 and March 2007, 73.4 million Americans moved. Fifty-six percent of these moves were within the same country. Some families even went abroad.

However, 55% of the students hold the opposite opinion. They think it is possible for their parents to be friends. Their parents often spend much time communicating with them and understand them. What’s more, if they have trouble, they can always turn to their parents for help. Parents often provide them with many valuable suggestions on both their study and their life.

As far as I am concerned, I think as parents, no matter how busy they are, they should care about their children’s study and trouble. Their children need their support and encouragement very much.
